REPORT:
Goodfellas awoke from a several month M7 sabbatical to beat Formica
3-0, spurred on by a convincing second half display that could have
easily seen them hit for six. For the uninitiated, M7 is a
seven-a-side league that we play in on weeknights, and it would also
appear to have a timeline that stretches as long as World Cup
qualifying rounds - whereas most leagues are concluded in 9 months, M7
is in its 14th month, and we still have 5-6 games to go. Our next
league game is not for another two weeks... Someone wake up the
commission!
First Half: We started with some rousing words from yours truly, who
dedicated the game to both Derek Kilburn, who was playing his last
(and first?) M7 game before he heads back to the US next week, and
also Kenny's newly trimmed, non-The Hangover style beard. We started
the game at a good tempo, passing the ball to feet, and passing to
burners such as Kilburn and Kai. While the former was overly generous
to our opponents, the latter decided to end the faffing about and hit
a hard shot in. Of note, Justin made some clean saves and directly
the back line well.
Second Half: We entered the second half with a tactical change raised
by Kilburn to press our opponents higher up the pitch to take
advantage of them getting nervous when we pressed. This worked to
great effect, and many of their crosses were sprayed at random, giving
us opportunities to win 50/50s. With our opponent's possession
waning, we capitalized on two occasioned with an outstanding cross
from the right flank from your's truly [Pause, Hold for applause] that
Bear tucked into a maurauding Pete Kang to blast into the net.
Kilburn added to Formica's misery with a shot that frankly, I can't
remember, but it made up for a few sitters. Fortunately, for Kilburn,
the sitter of the evening fell to David "Mascherano" Cheung who ran
the length of the pitch, chasing another maurauding run by Pete "Shoot
first, Ask Questions Later" Kang. Pete burned his marker with Thierry
Henry speed, and generously squared the ball to David as the keeper
approached. I'll leave it at that. Of note, Kenny played a blinder
with his deft touches and clean passes from the left wing. Of note in
a less good way, we played out the final 3 minutes with a man down, as
we had used up all our subs and the Chairman thought it would be
timely to have a leg cramp.
Jokes aside, this was a great win for the fellas, where we played
disciplined and unselfish football, and didn't play down to our
opponents level.
