Mary Dendygave themselves a mountain to climb against Winnington Avenue as they began the tie with ten players and within twenty minutes were down to nine when James Monaghan was forced off with injury . Goals from Terry Cain and a looping header from Scott Ravenscrofthad giventhe visitors a 2-0 lead inside ten minutes but remarkabley through a combination of committed defending and great saves from Chris Shepherd Winnington only added to their tally three minutes before half time when Steve Hughes drove in from the edge of the penalty area .
Less than a minute into the second half Will Reid made it 4-0 before Emlyn Hill, on as a substitute, stooped low to send a diving header wide ofShepherd to make it 5-0 . Steve Hughes bagged his second of the match from the penalty spotafterhe himself was upended by Ian Wood but all credit to Dendy who battled hard and with eleven players could very well have produced a different result
