This was the opening group match of the Balgay Bar Cup which we are the current holders of after winning the trophy last May, and it was a great start to the defence of the title as we picked up the win in a hard fought victory against a decent Ferry Mechanics side. The gaffer went with a 4-4-2 formation to start the game.
Jamesie
Gareth, Tam, Sharpy, Craig
Darren, Bellzo, Ryan, Ecky
Liam, Mitch
Subs; McBee, Barry, Bogger, Finlay, Liam D
In the opening exchanges there were chances at both ends and it was our opponents who eventually opened the scoring. They were awarded a free-kick out wide on the left. The ball into the box from the free-kick caused us problems, and although Jamesie saved the first attempt it was their striker that reacted quickest to the rebound to open the scoring. This goal sparked us into life and we hit back when Mitch pounced on a slack clearance and he scored from the edge of the box with a fine left footed strike into the bottom corner. We were soon then in the lead for the first time when the front two of Liam and Mitch combined well and Liam finished to make it 2-1. Bellzo then made it three when he got on the end of Ryan’s corner to head home from 6 yards out. Credit to Ferry though they didn’t give up and they pulled one back before half time with an O.G as the ball came off Tam’s erse and into the net.
HT 3-2
The second half was again evenly contested and although we didn’t look like conceding with just a one goal lead they were still very much in the match. With just under 15 minutes to go the skipper then wrapped up the points after beating the defender and cutting in from the left his pass was blocked by the defender but it fell right back to Ryan and he scored from 6 yards out to wrap up the points. Young Liam Doddrell then made his long awaited debut as he became the youngest ever player to pull on a Harleys shirt at just 16 years and 2 weeks old, and he nearly capped it off with a dream goal but the keeper denied him.
