On the third time of asking, the League Cup quarter-final finally got underway. We weren’t disappointed as lakeside started to apply the pressure from the start, with Simon Brady and Elliott Harris looking lively. Luke Robson was back to his best and was having great success down the right-hand side, creating some good openings for Lakeside, who continued to be denied by some great saves from the Saracens keeper. On the 20th minute Lakeside were rewarded for their efforts when Cameron Smith split the Saracens defence with a fantastic ball, with Elliott Harris opening the scoring against his former club. With both teams cancelling each other out, it was Lakeside who went into half time with a marginal 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Lakeside continue to press forward, although Lakeside were not having the rub of the green in front of goal. Saracens continued to defend desperately, getting bodies in the way in a bid to deny Lakeside. Two minutes after moving up front, Will Norman rounded off Lakeside’s scoring in the 50th minute, firing home from outside the box. Saracens responded by taking more risks and were applying more pressure on the Lakeside back five. The last minute saw a great move by Saracens, with the Saracens striker on hand to claim a consolation goal.
This was a well fought game which saw the leaders of division one book their place in the semi-final of the cup.
