Away league match played on 08 March 2009.
Kicked off at 2:30 AM

After a hugely impressive 2-1 victory over Broadway United at the start of the season, Lakeside were searching for another victory against their nearest title rivals, with the winner in pole position to take the League title.

Both sides started brightly, with Lakeside in particular dominating the play. In a much-anticipated midfield battle, Captain Luke Hitchman and Cameron Smith were showing their quality in the centre of the park, breaking up the play and providing an outlet for strikers Simon Brady and Will Norman. An early exchange saw Will Norman almost open the scoring, only for an outstretched arm from the Broadway keeper denying Lakeside an early lead. Although Lakeside were attacking with great caution, it was Broadway who took the lead against the run of play on the 14th  minute when James Schembri opened the scoring for the home side. With Broadway starting to stamp their authority on the game, Lakeside continued to defend with great resilience. Lakeside goalkeeper Rob Jones was forced into making some vital saves, with defenders Liam Powell, Harry Mansell, Sam James and Alex McPherson keeping Broadway at bay with a series of vital interventions. Broadway almost extended their lead, only for the ever-consistent Harry Mansell to make the vital goal line clearance. Steve Brown replaced Elliot Harris on the 19th minute and immediately provided some much-needed energy on the flank. Ten minutes before the interval, Broadway were able to add a second goal, with Lakeside going into the break looking to rediscover the form which has seen them deservedly lead at the top of the table.

The second half saw Lakeside immediately go on the attack, only for four-time league champions Broadway to counter attack and make it 3-0 on the 36th minute. One minute later, Broadway showed their class with James Schembri completing his hat trick with a clinical finish. Despite the flattering scoreline, Lakeside continued to battle, with their superior fitness showing. Cameron Smith’s long-range free kick forced the Broadway goalkeeper into making another great save. After a series of corners, substitute Steve Brown was on hand to claim his second goal of the season, celebrating with his trademark Jackson-like celebration (which he should be fined for!!). Steve Brown’s goal provided Lakeside with a lifeline, with Lakeside starting to pile on the pressure. Ben Simpson and Liam Gould soon entered the game to freshen up the Lakeside attack. After some great interchanges, Liam Powell’s cross evaded the Broadway defence, bringing Lakeside back into the game. With twenty minutes remaining, Lakeside continued to batter the Broadway defence, with Broadway managing to hold out for the victory.

In a game that would have previously ended in double figures, Lakeside demonstrated how far they have progressed over the past few seasons. With Lakeside looking to keep the pressure on Broadway, and with a potential cup final at Whaddon Road, Lakeside still have it all to play for!

A special thank you to the Keith Iles for arranging linesmen and the Lakeside supporters for withstanding the bad weather and supporting the lads.
