Willington edged out another vital win as they overcome a battling Wideopen side in tricky windy conditions, once again a strong second half performance instrumental in the victory.

Jack Renwick and Lee Crammond returned to the starting lineup replacing Ben Mcdermott and Alex Foreman while there was a welcome return to the squad for striker Dylan Adamson who was on the bench after missing the last 9 games, former Saint Mark Wilkinson who made 69 appearance for the club started in central midfield for the home side.

Another slow start to the game from the Quay saw Wideopen almost take an early lead as their striker Ross Dickinson raced through onto a long ball but he should of done better with his finish and dragged the ball wide of Luke Ords post.

Renwick had the Quays first chance of the game cutting back onto his right foot at the back post only for his goalbound effort to be deflected wide off his own teammate Kane Chirnside.

Dickinson was then allowed space behind the Saints defence again and this time he made them pay as took a great touch around Ord before sliding the ball into the empty net.

The Saints ended the half strongly and almost levelled when Matty Adams header was cleared off the line before he fired the rebound over while on the stroke of half time Chirnside's powerful effort rattled back off the post with the keeper beaten.

Chirnside got his goal five minutes after the break as he ran onto Ross Thirlaway's through ball and after his initial shot was well saved by he reacted quickest to tap home the rebound from close range to level the scores, Wideopen protests about Ord handling the ball outside his area prior to the goal waved away by the referee.

Adamson replaced Joe Connor on the hour and with one of his first touches he set up the go ahead goal for the Saints as his touch from a corner fell nicely into the path of midfielder Lee Crammond who smashed the ball home from 4 yards out for his 5th goal of the season.

Wideopen then wasted a glorious chance to equalize as winger Anthony Swain went through on goal but his right footed strike sailed narrowly the post with Ord beaten.

Thirlaway then looked to have sealed the win for the Quay as he took a fine pass from Dan Coleman in his stride before cutting inside from the left and smashing home at the near post from 8 yards to make it 3-1 with fifteen minutes to go.

Ryan Ferrier looked to have made it 4-1 but his tap in from close range was chalked off for offside before Wideopen were handed a lifeline back into the game as they were awarded a penalty after a Crammond foul in the area, Dickinson stepped up and sent Ord the wrong way to set up a nervy finish to the game for the away side.

In the dying stages Wideopen almost grabbed a point as substitute Craig Black smashed a shot that Ord did well to tip wide before from the resulting corner the wind assisted set piece evaded everyone before bouncing off the bar to safety with the final whistle going shortly after to the relief of the Quay players.

A 14th league win for Willington which equals the club record since joining the Northern Alliance in 2007 and with 5 games to go they sit 4th in the table however the teams around them have games in hand notably Blyth FC who the Saints travel to on Saturday.
