The Saints came back from the long trip to Berwick with nothing to show for their efforts as Spittal Rovers clinched a fourth league win in a row to move above the Quay in the table.
The game kicked off in a downpour and the home side buoyed by their recent up turn in form started the game brightly midfielder Terry Fannon sending a long range effort narrowly over Ellis Burns crossbar.
Spittal should of took the lead on fifteen minutes as an inswinging corner was headed wide by centre half Jamie Punton from 6 yards out a massive let off for the visitors.
Wing back Findlay Rippin almost gave the Saints the lead with a fluke goal as his right wing cross almost sailed straight in but Beveridge in the Spittal goal managed to get fingertips on the ball to keep it out.
The home side continued to pass up great oppurtunities as forward Stuart Coyle headed another glorious chance wide from 12 yards before an offside flag denied the same player when he raced through on goal
Willington top scorer Joe Connor then weaved his way into the area but his left foot strike was superbly blocked by Rovers defender Kyle Jeffrey
Ten minutes before the break Spittal took a deserved lead, a quality cross from winger Luke Strangeways picked out the run of Paul Wood who ghosted through the Saints backline to bury a header into the corner to give his side the lead.
With the Quay defence in disarray Coyle barged his way past Stephen King before firing a low shot that Burns did well to keep out with his feet at his near post.
The seasiders deservedly doubled the lead two minutes later with the Quay the architects of their own downfall, Spittal swung in a low corner which should of been cleared but wasn't the ball falling to Coyle who turned and fired a shot which was deflected in leaving Burns helpless to stop it
Just before half time Connor went so close to getting the the Quay back in the game as he cut inside from the left before cracking the post with a right footed effort
Chris Lowes replaced the injured Jack Wearmouth at half time for the Saints who knew they had to drastically improve in the second half or face a heavy defeat.
Ten minutes into the second half the Quay were awarded a penalty after Dan Coleman was brought down after a great run into the box, Joe Connor stepped up and for the second week in a row he made no mistake firing straight down the middle to make it 2-1
Coleman then went so close to levelling as he slid in at the back post to meet a left wing cross from Phil Doolan but he couldn't connect properly sending the ball narrowly wide
Spittal had chances to seal the win with Wood denied by a great save by Burns who tipped his header over from point blank range before Rovers Substitute Craig Bell was also denied by Burns when one on one with Stephen King racing back to clear the ball off the line with a puddle on the goal line almost catching him out.
The Saints were finished the game strongly and a series of long throws and corners almost saw them grab an equalizer as first Karl Charlton headed over from 6 yards after a long throw was flicked on and then the last kick of the game Rippin rose highest to meet a Kenny Horsman corner but he also headed over from close range before the referees whistle ended the game.
For the second week in a row a good second half display wasn't enough to repair the damage done in the first half a problem that the Quay will look to put right away to Cramlington United next week.
