A first ever Saints goal from veteran midfielder Kenny Horsman gave Willington a deserved and vital win in their quest for promotion as they equalled a club record 5 home wins in a row against promotion rivals Ellington.
After last weeks hammering at Cramlington the Quay were keen to put things right and they started the brighter of the teams and had the first effort on goal when left back Leon Elgie ran onto a loose ball before firing a shot that was smartly saved by Ellington stopper Andy Simpson.
Fifteen minutes in the Quay were awarded a penalty after winger Joe Connor was brought down after jinking his way past a couple of defenders, Brandon Williams stepped up but sent his spot kick wide of the post to the relief of the visitors.
Ellington had the leagues top scorer Adam Bains up top but it was his strike partner Andrew Carr who had their first effort a rasping strike from just outside the box that beat Luke Ord in the Saints goal but cannoned back off the crossbar.
Bains was looking to add to his 22 league goals this season before half time but when the ball was pulled back to him 12 yards out his strike was superbly blocked by Saints captain Callum Ancrum and the sides went into the break in a goalless stalemate.
Minutes into the second half the Saints were awarded another penalty with Connor again scythed down in the box when running past defenders, the youngster picked himself up to take the kick and he sent the keeper the wrong way to give the Quay the lead with his 11th goal of the campaign.
Connor went agonizingly close to doubling the Saints lead when he was slotted through on goal but his powerful right foot strike from just inside the area was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Ellington keeper Simpson.
The visitors looked certain to equalize on the hour mark when a right wing cross fell into the path of Carr but Saints right back Luke Taylor making his first start for the club made a heroic block to deny him on the line.
Carr was presented another chance five minutes later and this time he made no mistake, a long ball was miss controlled by Quay defender Stephen King and Carr pounced on the loose ball to run through and slot the ball past Ord left footed to level the game up.
The Quay reacted well to the set back and almost went back in front immediately when Williams layed the ball into Connor's path before his left footed strike from the edge of the box rattled the same post he had hit earlier.
With fifteen minutes to go the Quay hit the woodwork for a third time, winger Sean Conway tried his luck from long range and his effort beat the keeper but crashed back off the crossbar with the Saints wondering if lady luck had deserted them.
However Willington's perseverance paid off with five minutes to go, in spectacular fashion. Lee Crammond preparing to swing a corner took it short spotting midfield partner Kenny Horsman unmarked 25 yards out and he took a touch before curling a wonderful strike past the keeper into the far corner to give the Saints the lead with his first ever goal for the club.
Ellington piled everyone forward including keeper Simpson for a late corner but the Saints defence held firm to deny the visitors a leveller securing a 5th home win in a row in the process.
A great response from the Quay after last weeks defeat with the back line superb throughout they will hope to carry it into next weeks home game against Gateshead Redheugh at the Rising Sun Sports Ground (2pm ko)
