The Saints suffered a second defeat of the new season after a dismal display saw much improved visitors Blyth FC run out well deserved winners.
David Smith and Mark Wilkinson came in for Wearmouth and Doolan with Breheny dropping back to right wing back and Dale Johnson back at the heart of the defence with Matty Adams moving into centre mid.
The visitors made an early breakthrough, Striker Craig Webb turned Johnson on the byline before firing a shot come cross that was deflected into the path of Chris Phillips who had the simple task of tapping the ball home.
Webb then almost doubled Blyth's lead after he was played through one on one with Peter Lowery who rushed out to block the shot continuing his fine form this season.
At the other end top scorer Joe Connor had an attempt blocked by Blyth keeper Ross Fuller after another of his trademark mazy runs.
The Saints forced a corner and when the ball was swung in the referee surprisingly pointed to the spot after seeing foul play in the area Micky Young stepped up but was denied by Fuller who guessed the right way to deny the equalizer.
Minutes later Joe Connor was absolutely halfed in the area by the Blyth right back but the referee waved away the protests.
The Saints tactics of playing out from the back was sometimes their own downfall and Lowery produced another quality save to tip away a stinging drive from Blyth's Fitzsimmons after the ball was lost just outside the area.
The second half saw Blyth on top still and two crucial blocks from Clynch and Johnson denied Webb from close range and then a wicked ball from the right hand side caused panic but Clynch recovered well to clear for a corner.
Breheny was moved up front as the Quay looked for more in attack and within seconds it looked like the move had paid off as he met a cross with a bullet header that burst the net but the linesmans flag denied him and the Saints a leveller.
Blyth then went seriously close to sealing the game as Fitzsimmons turned on the ball 25 yards from goal before firing a powerful strike that whistled past Lowery but luckily for the morg crashed against the post and out to safety.
Mark Henderson then had a guilt edged chance to level for the hosts as he did brilliantly to get past his marker finding himself through on goal but he blazed the ball high over the bar with just the keeper to beat.
Blyth were let off the hook and they made the Quay pay as they doubled their lead with 9 minutes to go, Webb who had been a thorn in the side of the Saints defence all game found himself in space 20 yards out and he smashed an unstoppable strike past Lowery into the corner to all but seal the game for the visitors.
With seconds remaining Joe Connor grabbed a consolation for the Quay beating a couple of players before cutting in and firing a powerful right foot strike into the roof of the net for his 6th goal in 3 games but this one was too late to cause Blyth any late troubles as the referees whistle went shortly after.
Peter Lowery was man of the match after keeping the Quay in the game with a string of fine saves and vital catches. An improvement is needed urgently if we are to challenge at the right end of the table
