The Saints came back from a goal down to seal a sixth league win in a row as second half goals from Micky Young and Mark Henderson completed the comeback against a stubborn Spittal side who were reduced to ten men early in the second half.
The visitors had made the 130 mile round trip in January only to for the game to be called off at the last minute by the referee but this time the weather stayed fine with potential heavy rain staying away.
Willington went close early on as a Phil Doolan corner was met by a powerful header from forward Matty Adams but his effort cannoned back of the crossbar and was cleared by a Spittal defender.
Spittal looked dangerous early on and forward Luke Strangeways tested Peter Lowery early on with a shot from 18 yards that the keeper comfortably dealt withÂ
For the third home game in a row the Quay conceded the first goal of the game at home and they only had themselves to blame as a poor touch from centre half Jack Wearmouth was pounced on by Spittal forward Paul Wood who went on to coolly round Saints keeper Peter Lowery before slotting the ball into the corner to give his side the lead.
The Quay were then gifted a lifeline back into the game as a cross into the box from the right hand side was handled in the box resulting in a penalty being awarded, Micky Young back in the side after becoming a father for the first time stepped up but his effort went wide of the post leaving Spittal 1-0 up at the break.
The Saints hit the woodwork for a second timeas Dale Johnson rose highest to head a Doolan free kick off the bar as the home side started the second half brightly.
The game was turned on its head ten minutes into the second half as a scramble in the box fell to Dale Johnson whose powerful shot from close range was blocked on the line by Spittal defender Kevin Greshon who was adjudged to have used an arm to block the ball the referee awarding a second penalty and showing Greshon a harsh red card,
Micky Young showed great character to step up again and this time calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to level the scores ten minutes after half time and with Spittal losing the impressive Greshon the Quay were strong favourites to take all 3 points.
Spittal keeper Stephen Mason kept his side level with a couple of fine saves to deny Thirlaway as Willington cranked up the pressure for a winner and with 18 minutes left the pressure told, Matty Adams found Mark Henderson who beat his man before firing his strike into the corner from just inside the box leaving the keeper helpless, the veterans 15th goal of the season.
The Saints should of wrapped the game up in the later stages wasting a string of opportunities but with the visitors still reeling from the sending off they never looked like rescuing a point.
Six wins in a row for the first time ever in the Northern Alliance for the Quay who are now 4th with six massive games left to play none bigger than next weeks home clash with 5th placed Red Row Welfare 2.30 k/o.
