The Saints grabbed their second win in a row as they comfortably seen off a struggling Wideopen side and finally found their form in a much improved week for the club. A 4-1 midweek win over Swalwell had boosted the confidence of the Quay who made one change from that game with Kyle Austin coming in to replace the absent Noel Clynch at the heart of the defence whilst Stu Duffield returned to the squad for the first time in 18 months . On a warm day at the barking dog the Quay should of been ahead in the first 5 minutes as Andy Breheny fired over the bar with only the keeper to beat as the frailties in the wideopen defence appeared early on. The Quay seemed to think it was going to be an easy afternoon and their lazy approach to the game was nearly punished as Wideopen's number 8 fired a couple of shots just wide of Henderson's goal which seemed to act as a wake up call to the home side. The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute as Stephen King's right wing cross found Glen Johnson who controlled before finding Breheny who fired into the corner from 12 yards to give the saints the lead his 3rd goal in 2 games. A goal to the good the Saints pressed for more and it was Micky Austin who went nearest to doubling the lead as his shot from a tight angle whistled just past the post as his search to end his goal drought came narrowly close to ending. On 35 minutes Willington grabbed a second goal as Glen Johnson effortlessly slotted home from the penalty spot after Breheny was wiped out in the box by a crazy challenge from the wideopen centre half and the Quay went into half time two goals ahead. The second half was a story of missed chances for the Saints as time after time they fluffed their lines in front of goal firstly when Ryan Ferrier fired wide after bursting into the visitors penalty area. The Saints then hit the woodwork 3 times in 8 frustrating minutes first when Mark Henderson's free kick rattled the crossbar from 18 yards and then twice more when Ferrier and then Liam Taylor crashed shots against the post with the wideopen keeper beaten. With 25 minutes left the Quay finally scored a third and decisive goal as Glen Johnson grabbed his second of the game in fortunate circumstances as King's shot deflected in off Johnson's knee sending the keeper the wrong way in the process. Latimer, Duffield and Hutchinson replaced Ferrier, Macbeth and Carl Henderson in the latter stages as more chances went begging with Breheny and then Dale Johnson firing over the bar when well placed in the penalty area as the game drew to a close. Wideopen nearly ruined the first clean sheet of the season in the dying minutes but a last ditch tackle from man of the match King thwarted their striker as he ran through on goal and moments later the final whistle went and the saints had back to back home wins for the first time since may 2013. A much needed 6 points in two games have finally got the Saints season underway with the bonus of 7 goals and only one conceded they will look to build on this away to Forest Hall on Saturday.
