St Michaels F C 6 Goombas F C 1
St Michaels returned to League action after more than a month of Cup Games and no fixtures with a return match against Goombas F C who they had beat 4 - 1 earlier in the season. In the previous game St Michaels had started slowly but eventually run out comfortable winners.
It took only 2 minutes for St Michaels to have the first meaningful effort when Connor Reardon was unlucky not to score with a great strike. St Michaels were having the majority of the play with some good accurate passing and in the 11th minute Jack Meade set up Adam Fahy who made no mistake to make it 1 – 0. Four minutes later good perseverance by Danny Baptiste led to him increasing the lead.
St Michaels were still having the most of play but after 30 minutes on one of Goombas’s rare attacks a needless foul by the St Michaels keeper Harry Graham gave Goombas a penalty which was duly dispatched to make the score 2 – 1. The final 15 minutes saw St Michaels going through a sloppy patch with few moments of decent play and without further incident.
H T : 2 1 to St Michaels.
St Michaels started the second half strongly and after only 2 minutes a great cross by Ronnie Mewes was met by a superb header from the captain Sam Meade, 3 – 1 to St Michaels. Eight minutes later St Michaels were awarded a penalty and Ben Baptiste saw his effort saved by the keeper. Five minutes later a corner from Ronnie Mewes went through numerous players and straight into the net to make it 4 – 1. Two minutes later Jack Meade was unlucky to see his effort rebound off the bar and after 2 further minutes Ronnie Mewes fed Aaron Hughes who lashed the ball into the net to make it 5 – 1.
With the game already well won, St Michaels introduced 2 of their subs with Anthony Baptiste replacing Dan Regan and James Mckerrell replacing Matthew Booth and therefore making his long awaited debut after a nasty injury. After only 2 minutes there was to be a “fairytale” moment when James Mckerrell moved upfield from his left Back position cut inside the box and saw his shot go past the keeper and numerous defenders straight into the net to make it 6 – 1. With 20 minutes remaining Mo Abarak came on the field for Adam Fahy. This final period saw St Michaels play some lovely football with their intricate passing cutting through the Goombas defence with ease. Despite this there were no further goals and the final score was 6 – 1 to St Michaels which saw them move to 2nd place in the league only 2 points behind the leaders but with 3 games in hand.
Yet another good performance from St Michaels which keeps their unbeaten run going..Good performances from all the players with special mentions to Connor Reardon, Danny Baptiste, Jack Meade and Sam Meade However, Man of the Match goes to Aaron Hughes whose non stop running and wonderful touch throughout the game culminated with a fine goal.
