Drive time took on a new meaning as Junction players scuttled from all over the Midlands to do battle with the Grapes in a midweek League encounter in the battle for runners up. The home side still have eyes on the title whilst it has to be said we were indeed smarting from our cup exit a few days before . Despite our injury woes we managed to field a strong X1 , only Gaz W (stuck at work) being absent . A heavy deluge of sleet an hour before KO put the game in some doubt as the ref exercised his self importance by making us change to a junior pitch . What happened next was incredible ……straight from KO we rolled the ball into the path of their winger who crossed for Kevin Campbell( yes Kevin Campbell) to head home on 13 seconds . We went 2-0 down after 4 minutes and 3-0 after 15 minutes in the worst start ever and Baz was going greyer by the second. Our efforts to fight back resulted in panicky long balls that only served to make the Grapes juicier and they could have had more but for the efforts of Casso. The defence managed to rally and held them to the 3 goal half time lead which gave Barrington the job of resurrecting our pride. The second period was much better despite conceding again almost immediately and going 4 behind. Much more controlled and aware at the back, better passing in midfield and harder graft bought us possession and drive as we laid siege on the Grapes goal . The pressure finally told as Squizz regained his touch and pulled one back. Colin , Mitch and Andy all might have netted as we actually found the stamina and pride to launch a tremendous fight back. The Grapes did score again as we understandably tired and to be fair they have emerged as probably the best set up in the division , several of our players plumping for them to snatch the title from Lanesfield . At the end of the game , all 13 players can be proud of their second half showing – lots and lots of positives there, not least the performance of young Mitchell Lawley who claimed the Man Of The Match award – we hope the first of many to come . Gutsy displays from all though and only one game left …..its THE DARLASTON DERBY a week on Sunday at Darlo ‘s wonderful pitch against The Knot who will be looking to avenge our victory over them earlier this season. Before that we have got Colins birthday this weekend ; the train leaving for Worcester at 11 am from the Hawthorns on Saturday – lets hope you all get on the right train back this time ! Please text me your Player Of The Season votes (1st 2nd 3rd) as the presentation is to be held in The Junction on Friday May 25th followed by a visit to Walsall after closing !
