...Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on........
Our ach rivals Grapes must have been thirsting their squench at the prospect of this Roberts Cup Encounter . A fine opening win for them against The Crown ..twinned with our crushing defeat last week had put a desperate steely glaze in Barringtons eyes as he wondered if we could lift our game . Some positives ......a completely new back four to shore things up and the availability of Pedro Haddock and Ken Botos sent Mr Plant a welcome ray of optimism on this sunny September morn at Hydes Rd . Grapes turned up with a new crop of players to add to some of their stalwarts from last year but we had a vintage bunch ready to wit our pits against them . The first half started pretty evenly with both sides only managing to create half chances . Suddenly new striker Jason Herczek turned neatly past the right back t earn Andy a penno . Could Roberts give us a Roberts Cup lead ....unfortunately not as he skewed the spot kick slightly wide. We continued to take hold of the game though and Mitch Lawley was adding creativity to Antons hard work in midfield. Colin was also threatening in short bursts and had to do a lot of work . The back four looked absolutely solid this week and restricted Grapes to a solitary effort which Bloosey their massive striker/winger blazed wide . The Grapes began to hit long balls which were superbly marshalled back to the excellent Ricky Owen . Baz was well pleased with the commitment and passion on show and reminded everyone that we needed more of the same second half , putting on Ken Botos as fresh legs for Jason who put in a fine half . Our wide players Robbo and Tom Brettle put in a great shift and indeed Roberts was awarded another hance from the spot after a handball . This time the parsimonious one hit the target but his shot was not hard enough to beat the keeper . Fair play to Andy who persevered well and never dropped his head . OK I admit ...at that point I would have settled for the draw but then suddenly remembered it was a CUP match lol . A tactical switch of Robbo and Pedders added a bit of trickery to our attack as Pedders pulled Grapes apart to cultivate space for Colin . In a 20 minute spell from then on Colin crushed the Grapes threadbare hold on the game with a few solo runs, hopping through giving us a 2-0 advantage ...Game Over ! ..then the mighty Magyar Ken Botos struck our third beautifully and celebrated with maximum points for artistic expression . Lukey Lloyd got the nod to replace the exhausted air-cadet Tom Brettle and did OK once he got the hang of where right midfield was ! Colin dribbled through the Grapes defence at the finish to complete his hat trick . As Simon Rodgers the ref blew for an end to the one sided second alf, Barrington was left beaming with his pride as he had witnessed a showing of great character ....and no sour grapes from the losers . Well done lads ! I will be at training Wednesday 7pm Hydes but I am then off for a well earned holiday at last (its been so long since I managed to get away) . Hydes at Home v Sprintz (Staffs Knot last year) next Sunday tho with Ken and Gazza in charge .I will send out reminders later in the week .
