Sacriston played Red Lion for the second time in just three weeks and an excellent display saw the home side run out deserved 5-2 winners for their fourth consecutive victory.
Segga took the lead in the first minute of the game when some good pressing led to Renwick getting the ball on the edge of the box and he took a touch before blasting the ball into the far corner with a great strike for his first of the morning.
Red Lion equalised relatively quickly from a corner kick on around 10 minutes when poor marking led to the Red Lion attacker heading accurately into the top corner.
Following this goal was a completely dominant first half from the home side who were constantly pressurising the Red Lion players and this was demonstrated throughout the defence, midfield and attack of Sacriston, with Gaffer Sanderson commanding the new look midfield well.
The yellow submarines made it 2-1 on 20 minutes when Dan Johnson capitalised on an under hit back pass from the centre half and coolly finished passed the goalkeeper to continue his excellent run of form since signing for the club over the summer.
The banana men continued their excellent play and the alert Davey Wardle intercepted a cross field pass before accelerating up the field and playing in David Winter down the right who squared nicely across goal for Sammy Renwick to smash into the back of the net for his second of the game and his 82nd goal for the club in just 56 games (I’m sure Sam will enjoy reading that stat!).
The first half continued positively and Renwick had a couple of further chances to extend the lead but was just off target with a couple of efforts.
Half time came and Sacriston knew they were well in control and just needed to keep it going second half. The second half begun and Sacriston continued to play well across the park and the back four were looking strong and had a good shape about them.
Despite having plenty of the ball Sacriston were struggling to create any clear cut chances, though Tom did get his eye in with a sweetly struck left foot volley which I believe skimmed the post before going wide, this was met with laughs and mocks from the ‘injured’ Ice Man on the side-lines but it wouldn’t be long before the Ice Man was melted. Davey Wardle also came close with a rasping strike from long distance which again to my knowledge skimmed the woodwork, two excellent strikes.
Despite looking solid all game a lapse in concentration at the back led to the Red Lion striker getting in behind and he made no mistake finishing well into the far corner to make it 3-2 Red Lion.
Moments later the excellent Summers took the brunt of a goalmouth collision and had to be substituted through injury, and all of a sudden the result didn’t look as certain as previously seemed.
Lee Renwick replaced Summers and went up-front and Andy White came on for Dan and slotted into centre mid as Segga looked to get back in control of the game.
Fortunately the game was killed off with around 20 minutes to play when a good cross was delivered by Adam Wilson and the centre half’s header dropped on the half volley and Segga’s answer to David Beckham (or Dennis Irwin) took a deep breath, yelled ‘f*** the Ice Man’, and smashed the ball into the back of the net before turning to the dejected Asquith and cupped his ear with one hand, whilst putting his finger on his lips with the other.
This goal pretty much killed off the game but the Ambrosia Army made certain of the points when Adam Wilson and David Winter linked up with an excellent one-two down the left before the young pup delivered a great cross to Andy White who tricked the opposition keeper with a ‘fake shot’ before firing into the back of the net with a fantastic finish at the second attempt.
The rest of the game was pretty uneventful other than when desperate David ‘no goals’ Winter tried to emulate his younger brother with a fierce left foot volley from 6 yards out but his strike was slightly off target and ended up nearer to the sun than the back of the net.
Another great win and great performance from Segga who are using their squad well this season with numerous players stepping up to the plate in different positions, no more so than deadly Dean who went from centre-mid, to left striker, to centre half in the space of 10 minutes!
Away to Ouston Cherry Tree next week looking to make it five wins in a row.
