MILL HUTSON CUP 1ST ROUND PROPER
Boythorpe...3 Woodthorpe Inn...2 (SEE ALSO NEWS FLASH ABOVE THIS REPORT)
Boythorpe hoped to push on from the fantastic 6-1 victory last week against Division 7 side Woodthorpe Inn at Somersall Park this afternoon. The fun started OFF the field as we couldnt gain access to the home changing room, and after several hasty phone calls the visitors turned up and luckilly had a set of corner flags, so the game could go ahead ON TIME although it DID disrupt Bennys pre match plan. Boythorpe were kicking uphill at the start but the first chance of the game went the visitors way after a few seconds, but the chance went WELL wide of the goal. On 2 mins Lee Walton slipped his marker, running on to a through ball, but his shot was weak and was gathered easilly by the keeper. On 5 mins a Woodthorpe free kick was headed wide, as the blues defence was left flat footed. Furniss was called into action moments later, tipping over a snap shot as the visitors threatened again.
It was Boythorpe who took the lead, against the run of play on 10 mins, Bonson's superb cross field pass showed great vision picking out PAUL WALTON, who controlled the ball before beating a defender and firing across the keeper into the net for 1-0. They almost added to the lead within 2 minutes, but Scott Bennett was adjudged to have fouled his marker while running onto a through ball from brother Shane. On the quater hour Woodthorpe carved out a half chance with a ball over the top, but the striker miscontrolled the ball when well placed.
Boythorpe added to the lead on 23 mins, a crisp trademark through ball by Shane Bennett saw LEE WALTON race clear of the defence, before drawing the keeper and sublimely lobbing him from 20 yards into the top corner of the net. Boythorpe then had a great passage of play Scott Bennett turned well inside the box winning the Blues a corner, moments later he chased down a back pass, forcing the keeper to rush his clearance only as far as Lee Walton, who's quick cross just evaded Megyesi coming in on the back post. Woodthorpe had a half chance on 38 mins, another ball splitting the home defence but the striker fired his shot high, wide and not very handsome. This however was only a brief respite as a minute later a ball from way upfield caught Furniss well off his line, and the striker slotted the ball beyond the stranded keeper. They almost drew level a minute from half time, good work up the wing and a quick cross into the box saw them fire a chance inches wide as the hosts came under pressure. HALF TIME Boythorpe...2 Woodthorpe Inn...1
Boythorpe started the second half very brightly putting together a few smart moves Higginbottom trading passes with Lee Walton before picking out Shane Bennett. And moments later a quick Higginbottom throw was seized upon with a fine flick by Lee Walton to brother Paul, but his cross into the box was scrambled away. Another ball into the box on 54 mins caused panic in the Woodthorpe defence as Boythorpe tried to put the game to bed. Widerman was introduced to the fray on 55 mins replacing Megyesi. He soon got into the action with a smart one-two with Shane Bennett before winning a corner. On 64 mins a Shane Bennett corner was fired in low, and Lee Walton LASHED his shot inches over the bar. Bonson who was still recovering from injury made way for Whitehead on 65 mins.
Boythorpe thought they had put the game beyond Woodthorpe with just 20 mins remaining, a Widerman through ball set Lee Walton one on one with a Woodthorpe defender, the striker muscled his way past the marker and slid the ball beyond the advancing keeper, but celebrations were cut short as the ref decided he had used excesive force. Woodthorpe then began to get a foothold on the game and carved out a few chances of thier own. The most notable being a low hard shot from just outside the box, well pushed away by Furniss for a corner on 77 minutes. Club captin Dean Brown came on for out of sorts Lee Wright on 82 mins, returning from a knee injury that had kept him out of last weeks win.
KEV WIDERMAN kept up his fine scoring record on 86 mins, a ball around the edge of the visitors box eventually found its way to him via good control and pass by Lee Walton and the sub smashed the chance home meaning he has now scored in ALL 3 cup ties this season. Woodthorpe pulled a goal back in added time, a corner was well met by a Woodthorpe defender, and his header looped over Furniss in to the net, but it was too late to make much diference to the final outcome.
