Benny stuck with the 3-4-1-2 formation he has used during the summer, for the first ever game by newly named BRITANNIA F.C. (formerly Boythorpe) at Castle Leisure against league newcomers Miners & Diners. Britannia pushed forward from the off, but it took a good 8 mins to muster a worthwhile attack, a long Dean Brown pass saw Mitchells touch desert him. Within a minute a Dean Brown cross won a corner for the visitors, but it came to nothing.
It was no suprise however when Britannia took the lead after 18 mins, another fine Dean Brown ball playing MITCHELL in and he fired past the keeper. The score was almost DOUBLED a minute later, a Mitchell corner was well controlled by Brown with his back to goal, but he swivelled well, but his shot was saved, but it appeared to cross the line before being hacked away by a defender. On 23 mins Scott Bennett went close with a diving header from a Danny Brown cross, but the ball found its way to Mitchell but his fierce shot flashed just wide. Scott Bennett held the ball up well and found Dean Brown on 28 mins, but he shot inches over.
Britannia however added to the score on 29 mins Wright finding MEGYESI next step GOAL! 2 became 3-0 on 36 mins a fine Shane Bennett ball picked out MEGYESI again. Leading scorer for the past THREE years and making his 100th appearance LEE WRIGHT got into the act in the 44th minute, great work by Shane Bennett and Dean Brown winning the ball out wide found Megyesi who put the ball across the edge of the box to Wright and although his shot bobbled badly it fooled the keeper. HALF TIME Miners & Diners...0 Britannia...4.
Within 3 mins of the restart Hardy came on for Bonson at left back, and seconds later the M&D defence was breached again, a Shane Bennett corner was fumbled by the luckless keeper and MILES smashed the free ball into the roof of the net. The ball was in the net AGAIN a minute later Brown playing MITCHELL in again and he fired home beyond the keeper. The game was held up for a few moments on 53 mins when Hardy recieved a nasty gash above his right eye, when an opponents boot caught him. Scott Bennett was unlucky after 55 mins, a superb ball up the line saw the striker run onto the ball and he flashed a wicked shot across the keeper, but just wide of the post.
The goals came thick and fast AGAIN with Britannia finding the net FIVE times in little more than TEN MINUTES, first MEGYESI grabbed his hat-trick with a sublime clipped ball over the advancing keeper after being played in by Dean Brown. Then on the hour a superb ball up the line by the impressive Lawrence set DANNY BROWN clear, he drew the keeper before firing past him into the net. Controversy surfaced after 62 minutes MITCHELL angered his captain Wright by pushing him away from a though ball when he was clear, before taking it on himself, scoring a hat-trick of his own. MITCHELL added his FOURTH and Britannias NINTH on 66 mins after Danny Brown played him through, but Wright still angry was substituted giving a welcome return for club captain Shaun Goodwin.
DANNY BROWN grabbed his second with just 21 mins left, and the goals kept coming, on 71 mins a fine ball by Danny Brown picked out GOODWIN who took his time before placing a fine shot past the keeper. MITCHELL grabbed his record breaking FIFTH goal in spectacular fashion, Scott Bennett raced onto a through ball before his shot was parried by the keeper, it fell to Mitchell with his back to goal and he cheekilly back heeled it home for 13-0. There was a flurry of 3 goals in 4 minutes as the game came to an end. First MEGYESI added his name to the growing 4 goals in a game list after a strong run and cross by Mitchell saw him poke the ball home from close range. Then Danny Brown grabbed HIS hat-trick and thus equalling the teams biggest score ever when he was played through by Mitchell. Could they break the record???....YES of course they could goal number SIXTEEN came after 86 minutes and the Miners & Diners team looked well, shell shocked, DANNY BROWN netted his FOURTH with another strong run and finish. FULL TIME Miners & Diners...0 Britannia...16. Man Of The Match Steve Miles, despite all the action being at the other end he did everything right at the back, and even got on the scoresheet himself, but it was close with all players puttitng in a good shift. Oh and by the way... i think we MIGHT be top of the league after this!!!
