Harleys Scarlets....3  AFC Walton....6

AFC Walton visited NEW league leaders Harleys Scarlets this morning, still smarting from the previous weeks defeat that robbed themselves of going to the sumit. Benny shuffled the players around again looking for a better response, but was forced into a late change after finding centre half Dean Brown had picked up a knee injury in training. the game started at a healthy tempo and it was Scarlets who carved out the first real chance of the game after just 3 mins, courtesy of a short back pass from Goodwin, the striker put the ball past the advancing Furniss, but also wide of the goal. They went close again on 7 mins after a fine team move saw the shot well saved by Furniss. AFC went close moments later a superb long ball from Bettney picked out Wright, whose initial shot was blocked, the rebound fell to Brown, but he couldnt keep his shot down. On 10 mins AFC grabbed the lead, a poor kick out by the Scarletts keeper was well controlled  by Mitchell, he was tripped as he went into the box and BETTNEY drilled the spot kick home. Scarlets broke from the re-start but Brown was alert to clear the danger. The ball was swept upfield and AFC won a throw in on the left, Mitchell took a quick throw to Wright who gave him the ball back for BROWN to fire home for 2-0.

Brown was busy again on 14 mins, when he and Furniss teamed up to thwart Scarlets with a great block. He capped a great personal 6 minutes spell when his clynical pass picked out WRIGHT to prod the ball home to cap a personal milestone of 100 team goals in 131 games (LISTED BELOW). Mitchell found himself upended in the box again on 18 mins, after his mazy run. The hosts keeper tried to play mind games with BETTNEY at the spot kick, but he just took him the wrong way with the kick. Chaos ensued in the AFC box on 20 mins but Furniss made a great diving save to push the ball wide. They did grab a goal however on 21 mins when a long ball cut the visitors defence and the striker lifted his shot over the diving keeper.

Scarlets got a bit too excited on 25 mins and a long speculative shot went WAY, WAY over the bar and high into the tallest tree  in the cemetery next door. On 28 mins Bettney picked out Mitchell who controlled the pass first time, but his effort was cleared. On the half hour Browns run and pass found Wright but the striker miscued his shot. On 40 mins an AFC move broke down and Scarlets ran clear, but the effort was put wide. AFC restored thier 4 goal lead just a minute later, Bennett took the corner and MITCHELLS glancing header crept in by the far post. There was a bit of hand bags on 43 mins when a Scarlets player appeared to take a swing at Wright who was very unlucky to also recieve a yellow card along along with the miscriant.  HALF TIME  Harleys Scarlets...1  AFC Walton....5.

AFC started the second half well with Lee Walton and Brown linking up well, with the latter firing across goal. Scarlets puleed themselves back into the game on 50 mins a throw in saw Scarlets shoot at goal, Funiss fumbled the ball and the rebound was bundled in for 5-2. A great through ball from Paul Walton saw Brown crowded out but winning a corner. The kick was swung in by Bennett, Mitchell headed towards goal, but although it appeard to cross the line it was hacked away and the Referee waved play on. A Scarlets break was saved by Furniss for a corner. On 66 mins another Bennett corner saw the goal of the game, the ball was dropped into the box, and MITCHELL launched himself into a spectacular scissor kick into the roof of the net.  The game the went into a disjointed affair with neither side able to fashion a decent scoring chance. Benny made a double substitution to try and freshen things up on 70 mins Bonson and Taylor replacing Bennett and Brown. It was Scarlets however that almost grabbed a goal back, when a rasping shot cannoned off the inside of the post and out to safety on 75 mins. And it was Furniss again to keep the resurgent Scarlets at bay, a horrible bobbling ball was well saved by the keeper. Whitehead came on for Bennett with just 6 mins left, tucking in at full back. As the game drew to a close Scarlets snatched a late THIRD goal, AFC's defenders were caught out with a smart ball in, and the strikern nipped in to sneak the ball in at the near post.
