Not an auspicious start to our campaign but a solid one, if you consider of the wealth of players out of contention for this match. Holidays have hit hard and at least 6 players were not able to be selected. But we played well enough in the first half to obtain a two goal head start.
We had to dig in through the second half and I think the defence played extremely well, all to be undone by a very dodgy decision made by the female referee. I think up to that point she had done very well controlling the game and being as unfair to us as she was to Leigh town.
Frosty’s well taken opener saw him hit a good shot on the run and beat the keeper from some range this then allowed us to find some rhythm and control on the counter attack. A further advantage was then afforded us when Lee B finished off a good team move to beat the keeper from inside the box.
The second half then saw us loose a little shape and when Leigh Town popped in their first goal it gave us problems, heads went down and it took a good ten minuets to regain some composure and control of the game. There were some good performances in today’s game, notably from some of the lads playing out of position or just through their own comfort zone.
The Man of the Match then went to Steve T, we all know he gave the penalty away but from my position, running the line, I saw no real infringement and the ref went with the call rather than the possible rules of the game. The pen also came against the run of the play and made the game feel like a loss rather than a tough point dropped.
We will need to gather our thoughts and efforts for next weeks game now and hope that it’s the last time an official will steal points off our hard efforts on the pitch. Some how I don’t think it will be the last time but I’m no fortune teller.
