Today’s game was not one for the purist or the perfect advert for our own brand of football, it was how ever one for the believers and a segway into how we, as a team, are becoming filled with determination and guile. Two weeks fell behind; two weeks turned the deficit to a lead.
Leigh Town were never going to make it easy for us it was there last game of the season and they wanted to finish on a high, they did claim a share of the points but that was from a retaken and well saved penalty. Was it a pen hell ye Billy decided the opposing striker looked better on his arse and dually dispatched him there sliding in from behind. Was it a retake I don’t really think so. In a word Leigh got away with it.
We could have buried the game in the first half Kemp slide through twice before his well taken header. Mike had a great goal to put us in front and we exposed and turned Leigh Town so much that it made we feel we could of come away with more than a one goal advantage on the 45 minuet mark. We started sluggish again for the second week in a row and it cost us for the second week in a row, so that needs to be addressed quickly.
Too be fair we start sluggish on most restarts, we need to see them as greater opportunities than just a change of possession. We can use these periods of play like a spring board as we play fine counter attacking football, let’s try to improve on that going forward.
I don’t have much to say, how can I moan it was the hottest day of the year, everyone was suffering so overall we need to say that a point was fair and we can improve some sides of our brand of football. I started to see a few fingers pointing again, true the players were not to blame and I hope that was due to passion and frustration rather than dictatorial ego.
I suppose the overall message for this week is we knocked it too long to fast; we needed to get the ball down and find the creative midfielders then spring forward. Not doing this created a lot of possession for our opponent and thus placed us under the kosh for longer than what was comfortable. When we did do this especially in the first half I feel we saw the best from the likes of Mike Edgar, Shane and ‘goal a game’ Parker. Where as the second half we needed big performances from our defenders and isolated our attacking options.
As I said it starts again Saturday verses Southchurch at Cupids, in a winnable game against good opponents, they could be light a few players but all of them have been around the block and been successful. The question that only remains is with our new found determination and spunk can the points be ours, I truly think so. Perhaps we have started to gel, at the right time of the year, we are listening to each other and we are now all pulling in the same direction…….keep it this way and we will continue to look up instead of down, looking at success rather than the negatives.
We have 3 games and a final left, win all of them and we finish fourth, it’s that simple. Two wins or four points gets you 5th. Stand up and be counted it’s a good year so far so lets finish it as good as we all know we can. Look around and see the guys around you, if they are ready for the fight you should be also……..All games are a cup final now, which is good because who wants to play boring games.
