Viper Reds vs  Primrose FC

The Viper Reds continued their recent run of fine performances as once again they eased into the goal scoring groove, this time against the blues of Primrose FC.  The magical formula seems to be:

Excellent skills + teamwork + non-stop effort = great results.

With the team missing Taylor, the starting line-up was: Alex between the sticks and having to contend with a right old mud bath in the goalmouth,  Jordan and Lewis Ireland in defence, Jack on the right wing, Adam Elstob on the left and Harry and Robert in the middle with super-subs Lewis Keenan and the excellent Adam Wardle waiting to get in the thick of the action.

The Blues kicked-off but immediately Adam Elstob got to work with a great tackle to get possession of the ball and set up a good passing move. The ball went from Adam to Jack , to Robert and finally to Harry whose long-range shot was scrambled around the post by the Primrose keeper, making a good save at the expense of a corner.

A throw in to the Vipers  and Robert’s first opportunity with a well struck volley that was deflected out for a corner.  Jack’s turn next to try to get on the scoresheet when a corner ball fell to him, but again, some how, the blues survived.

Good work from Jack then put Harry through. A flicked shot was cleared outside the box but only as far as Captain Marvel.

Now, 700 miles away from Monkton, near the border between France and Switzerland, boffins have been working deep underground in a massive tunnel to build a crazy machine that’s called the Large Hadron Collider. The egg-heads have been trying to study the beginning of the universe by smashing beams of tiny particles together. Unfortunately, for the last 14 months the machine has been bust  -  the brain-boxes  just can’t get enough energy to make it work.

If  only they could find a way to harness the power of the left-foot Thompson Thunderbolt! Once again a scorcher from Robert leaves the goalie no chance and gives the Vipers an early lead, 1-0.

Next, Jack got the ball in the area and turned sharply to fire in a shot that, having looked like getting stuck in the mud, managed to cross the line. Nice one, Jack! 2-0.

Further pressure from the Vipers  and when Robert put in a great in-swinging corner, the ball comes to Adam Elstob and the rebound crosses the line.      ‘Ka-ching’ , as once again extra pocket money rolls in for Adam, 3-0.

The Blues had a rare attack and were awarded a free-kick. The ball was well struck but the Vipers’ wall held firm. Good defence Lads!

Next, a magical run from Harry down the right wing. Carrying the ball, Harry beats three players before drifting into the box and clipping a strong shot. The keeper manages to get a hand to the ball but can do nothing as Jack pounces on the rebound to extend the lead. Excellent play Vipers, 4-0.

Next it was the turn of the defence to get in on the action as a dangerous attack was broken down by a crunching tackle from the commanding Jordan at left-back. Ouch!

A Blues free-kick then looked to be creeping into the goal but Alex made a fantastic save by getting down well to the ball and tipping the ball around the post. Mint keeping, Alex! Half-time score 4-0.

The interval saw Harry and Jack replaced by Adam Wardle and Lewis Keenan. Good work from Adam Elstob who tackled deep into the Reds’ half but then dribbled the ball  into the Blues’ area to win a corner.

Robert then latches on to a ball that’s bobbling about dangerously in the Primrose penalty area to fire another goal, this time placing the ball  inside the right hand post. Nice one Robert, 5-0.

Jack and Harry then went back on to replace Lewis Ireland and Adam Elstob.

Good pressure from the Vipers then forces the ball onto the Primrose line and when Lewis Keenan sees the opportunity he tucks it away nicely. Good goal Lewis, 6-0.

From the kick-off the Vipers immediately put Primrose on the back foot and the Blues’ defence can’t stop the ball crossing the line,7-0.

A Vipers’ corner is swung into the box and the defensive clearance falls to Lewis Keenan and the ball ends up in the back of the onion bag for his second of the match.8-0.

More good work sees a strong run from Harry into the box and crack a powerful shot into the net. The keeper has no chance, 9-0.

Next, Jack swings in a corner that falls to Lewis who doesn’t need to be asked twice. Yes, he’ll take his first hat-trick, thank you very much. Well done Lewis, well deserved, 10-0.

A late shot from Robert was unable to extend the lead further and the Vipers finished the match, just as they had started, looking to attack.

A good win today for the Lads, saw everybody play their part. Keep up the good work Vipers, because you’re improving as a team week on week.

As the teams shook hands after the final whistle, Jimmy was forced to echo the sentiments of Vinnie Jones in ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’:

“It’s been emotional,” says Jimmy, as he hugged Gary in celebration. And then  we all squelched our way back across the muddy fields to the car park, starting the countdown to next Saturday already...

Final Score: 10-0

Gary’s Man of the Match: Lewis Keenan

Jimmy’s Man of the Match: Robert Thompson

John’s Man of the Match (via telephone): Harry Edwardson
