So farewell 209/10 season – it’s been a blast!

No usual match report today. Despite a decent performance , especially in the second-half, the Viper Reds final match of the season ended in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the much improved Consett Cubs.

The result was a bit harsh on the Reds but make no mistake, it couldn’t take the gloss of what’s been a very successful and highly enjoyable season.

Some fantastic results over the season, due in no small part to the efforts of all the players.

Well done Lads, you can all be proud of the progress that together you’ve helped each other make.

Alex “the Cat” – there’s no braver keeper to be seen at Monkton on a Saturday morning. When an attacker is closing in on goal, Alex will always come out to narrow the angle and dive fearlessly to snatch the ball from the striker’s feet. Made some fantastic saves at crucial times, in what is the hardest position on the pitch. Outstanding!

Lewis “the Rock “ Ireland – what a tackler! Fearless into the tackle and an exceptional ability to bring the opposition’s attacks to a juddering halt with an immaculately timed tackle. Brilliant all season!

Jordan “the Boss” – a powerhouse in defence, always strong in the tackle and with the ability to set up an attack with a skilful clearance. End of season appearances in midfield showed tremendous versatility and skill. Great work, Jordan.

Taylor “Mr Quality” -   a classy defender who oozes quality. Always seems to have time to look up and make a clever pass. Always reliable and composed. Tremendous work Taylor, well done!

Jack “in the Box” – midfield dynamo who knows where the back of the net is.  Turned himself from wing-wizard into a goal-machine with some hard-working performances. Always a dangerman in the box, Jack has been in the thick of most matches. Superb!

Captain Marvel – what can we say about Rob? In defence, in midfield and upfront Rob has been awesome and led by example. Watch out for those Thompson Thunderbolts and  those great tackles. Is there a better left foot to be seen in the Chase Holmes League? Doubt it!

Adam “Bite yer Legs” Elstob – has just got better and better all season and contender for most improved player of the season. Strong in the tackle and with the ability to get stuck in. But it’s not all about the tackling thing. Who will forget the unbelievable hat-trick?? Worth every penny it cost his dad!

The excellent Adam Wardle – a natural player, comfortable on the ball and great up the wing. A great team player who is also dangerous up front. Can use his pace to  turn defence into attack and knows when to pass. Always nothing less than  excellent. Well done Adam!

The mercurial Harry Edwardson – great on the ball and capable of excellent passing and movement. Always looking to take a player on where he can and has the legs to run all day. Liked the goal celebrations too, Harry!

Lewis “ the playmaker” Keenan – the thinking man’s footballer. Thoughtful runs off the ball and some great hold-up play to link up the midfield with the attack. Scored some vital goals, a great team player.

But let’s not forget the coaches. They do it for the lads, but we all owe them a huge “thank you” for their work this season. Gary, John and Jimmy who have been fantastic and made sure the matches have been played in the right spirit and have kept the lads all kicking in the right direction, mostly.

And of course, a special thanks to Phil for his time and effort with the Reds– it really is appreciated. Chris too, because the coaches are a team.

Finally, congratulations to our mates the Vipers!!. Well done all of you for topping the league.

Now I’m guessing the World Cup 2010 in South Africa has come a little bit too soon for the Vipers, but who knows what’s in store for 2022? Bring it on!

Final Score: 1-2

As the end of season man-of the-match awards are too close to call, no awards were announced today. We’ll find out at the end of season presentation night.
