Six of the Best for the Viper Reds...

The Viper Reds returned to the green, green grass of Monkton today after what had turned out to be a rather long and unwelcomed  winter break.  A number of questions faced the Lads like, will we remember how to pass the ball to each other? How will we know which way to kick? Will we ever be able to score again? And for the mams and dads, will the bairn’s boots still fit them?

The Vipers started with Alex in goal, Lewis Ireland and Taylor in defence. Jack, Harry, Captain Marvel were in midfield and Lewis K. the hungry striker.  Adams Elstob and Wardle were waiting to come on.

The Reds’ intentions  were clear from the start when straight from the Primrose kick-off, good work from Jack got control of the ball and set up Harry whose early shot went safely into the keeper’s arms.

And the early Reds’ pressure was soon rewarded when Robert collected the ball from a throw-in on the left-hand side, carried the ball forward and shot from the edge of the area. The ball was expertly guided the right side of the post and the Vipers were in the lead. Good work, Skipper! 1-0.

Despite some relentless pressure, with corner after corner and some great attacking play, the second goal proved difficult to get. Gradually, as the half progressed, the Lads got their shape and started to pass the ball and find some space. Adam Elstob then replaced Harry and immediately set about getting in the thick of it with some whole hearted tackles in midfield.

The Blues keeper  was doing  fantastically well with some very good saves to deny the Reds a second goal before half-time. Doing well with just 6 men, when the Blues did break into the Viper’s half, they were well stopped by Lewis Ireland and Taylor, ever alert to even a sniff of danger.

Adam Wardle came on for Taylor at the start of the second-half and the pattern of the game continued. Then, good work saw the ball at Adam Elstob’s feet in the middle of the area. A cool nutmeg through the keeper’s legs and the ball nestled in the back of the goal. Fantastic finish from the midfield dynamo! 2-0.

Great work from the excellent Adam Wardle drew a foul out wide on the left. A great in-swinging ball from Rob and alert play from Jack who steered the ball into the goal. Slick! Jack’s back and it’s 3-0.

There then followed a passage of play where Robert blasted a number of long-range shots on target but the Primrose keeper continued his good form and somehow managed to keep Captain Marvel from scoring.

Harry returned to the action and chasing a long ball forward got hisshot away from the edge of the area. A deflection off the defender left the keeper no chance, 4-0.

Taylor came back in for Jack and looked assured in a midfield role. Taylor then passed a great ball forward and Lewis K. latched onto it, firing a good curling shot past the keeper and into the back of the onion bag. Nice one Lewis, 5-0.

A good shot was then well saved by the keeper but Harry was on hand to force over the rebound and make the final score 6-0.

A great start from the Reds who got back into the swing of things. Good attacking play with great defence when needed and Alex keeping alert throughout the match. Well done to both teams and especially the Primrose keeper who made some fantastic saves, and like his team mates, kept playing to the end.

Final Score: 6-0

Gary’s Man of the Match: Captain Marvel (aka Robert)
