Reds got back to winning ways against a spirited Jarrow Super Pinks today. Relieved that the rain had finally stopped and the match was on, the lads gathered for this early morning kick-off at a rather squelchy Monkton Stadium.
Buoyed by the presence of the last Newcastle player to lift any silverware of note, (the ancient and trench-coated former Magpies’ skipper , Sunderland and Carlisle legend Bobby Moncur), the Reds made light of a very heavy pitch.
Starting line up was Alex in goal and Taylor and Lewis Ireland at the back. Jordan was in the centre of midfield with Adam on the right, Jack on the left and Nathan up front. Harry, Rob and Lewis Keenan were on the bench.
The Reds started well and some clever passing in midfield from Jordan to Nathan to Adam Elstob nearly paid dividends but not this time. But it wasn’t long after that a great clearance from Lewis Ireland fell to Nathan just inside the area and the ball was neatly tucked away to give the Reds an early lead, 1-0.
A couple of chances later and the ball is at the feet of the ever-alert JT who provides a clinical finish, 2-0.
Jack nearly turner provider when an excellent corner from the right was met by Jordan with a powerful volley just wide of the post. Unlucky Jordan, great effort!
Good control from Jack receiving another great clearance from Lewis at the back and this time Jack places the shot across the keeper to guide the ball just inside the right hand post, 3-0.
Next it was Adam with his head in his hands as great work to latch on to an under-hit goal kick went unrewarded, the shot just scooped tantalisingly over the bar.
Nice move from Lewis at the back to Jordan in mid-field to Jack who clips a magnificent curling shot into the top left hand corner, 4-0.
A fantastic double-save from the Pinks’ keeper denied the Reds, but there’s still time for a great cross from Jack on the left to find Nathan well placed at the back post to convert the chance and leave the half-time score, 5-0.
Rob, Lewis Keenan and Harry were brought on for Jordan, Adam and Jack. A frantic scramble from the goal-kick gives a hint of a sniff to Nathan but that’s all that’s needed and it’s 6-0.
Lewis Ireland then scores to make it a lucky 7-0.
The Pinks’ keeper was then called on to save a rasping shot from Harry before Lewis Keenan is denied by the post as his fine shot smacks against the upright.
A long throw from Harry Delap gets launched into the area and Nathan ( who else?) is on hand to tuck the ball away, 8-0.
Fantastic run from Lewis Keenan down the right who passes the ball to Harry at the near-post. A clever back-heel pushes the ball onto Lewis Ireland who slots it away, 9-0.
A ball into the area from Harry, and it’s Lewis Keenan’s turn to get on the scoresheet and make it 10-0.
Lewis Ireland then adds to the score as a goal-kick is forced back into the area and into the back of the net, 11-0.
A scare for the Reds as Alex is finally called into the match in the last minute of the game. With his first touch of the ball, Alex does well to get down and guide the ball round the post for a corner, after which the ref blows his whistle and it’s all over until next week.
Well done Lads, a decent result but let’s also say well done to the Pinks for their never say die attitude and the good spirit in the team. Somehow, next week might be a different proposition!
Final Score: 11-0
