The first competitive fixture of the season proved to be a bit of an anti-climax, after a great pre-season, where the lads had worked really hard at their passing game, with some encouraging results.
It seemed to take an age for the first goal of the season to go in, with some clear-cut chances going begging, as well as some fine saves from the Watlington keeper. Eventually, man of the match Lewis Jeavons started the ball rolling with great finish from outside the box. This seemed to settle the team down, with their dominance starting to show through more controlled passages of play.
Clenchwarton pressured the Watlington goal, with an eventual penalty given for handball. Kodie stepped up, only for his shot to be saved by the keeper.
Robbie Rose scored his first goal for the club, on his competitive debut, by latching on to a loose ball in the penalty area, from a Kodie Tuvey corner. This was soon followed up by 2 great goals for Kodie himself, as well as the first for Josh Murray.
Half Time : 5 – 0
Minutes in to the second half, Kodie rounded of his hat-trick with a cool finish in to the corner. Josh Murray soon followed this up with a smashed shot in to the top of the net.
Josh Murray made a fantastic run at goal, beating the very difficult offside trap employed by the Watlington back four, after a great Karl Brown pass. Josh looked certain to score, only to be brought down from behind in the goal area. Penalty.
Kodie bravely stepped up to take this again, only for the resulting shot to go wide.
However, by this time, the game was already over. Lewis Jeavons tapped in for his deserved second of the game to finish the score off at 8 – 0.
The score could easily have been doubled on another day. There was lots of hard work from all the players, even if the play was a little disjointed at times. However, a great result to help get the season up and running.
Well Done lads!
