Boreham traveled to Melbourne Park for this double header against Manford Way, the penultimate weekend of football for this season. Squad news was encouraging as 14 fit and available players made the trip. In the absence of Worthy, Hopley came in for his season debut at the back. Ryan Ince was also available and slotted in at centre midfield alongside Gooders, with Walsh coming in at right midfield. The team otherwise mostly unchanged from the previous week. The strong looking bench was made up of Adam Dale, Rush and Joughin. With 6 points up for grabs, Boreham knew that taking all these would almost certainly guarantee them 5th place in the league and with it the possibility of promotion. It was Boreham who started brightest, Gooders and Ince were controlling the middle of the park and Simpson and Hopley were dealing with the rare opposition threats. Boreham opened the scoring midway through the first half, a nicely played ball forward from Parsons was collected by Long, who with still plenty to do, managed to skip past his man and fire a firm shot into the opposite bottom corner from the edge of the box, great strike and 1-0 to Boreham. That's how it remained until halftime. Boreham came out for the second half unchanged and within a couple of minutes of the restart a moment of magic was produced! A Boreham corner was only half cleared to the edge of the box where skipper Parsons unleashed an unstoppable right footed volley from all of 25 yards which flew in off the underside of the bar, incredible strike from Boreham’s ever present skipper giving his team the 2-0 cushion their dominance deserved. Parsons was delighted with his first goal of the season and indeed first goal in over 5 years! And what a way to do it. Boreham continued to control the game, limiting their opponents to scraps and half chances. With 15 mins to go, Joughin and A Dale were thrown on in place of Long and the injured J Dale. Unfortunately Boreham were denied the clean sheet when the ref awarded a penalty with about 10 minutes to go. TV replays show the ball appeared to strike Walsh on the elbow as he attempted to clear but perhaps an earlier foul on Magsy was missed by the ref. The lumpy Manford man slotted home the pen to make for a nervy final few minutes. Boreham held on for the 3 points and had confidence going in to the 2nd game following this 2-1 victory.
