Who ever said lightning doesn't strike twice?.....................
What a load of horse shit. Almost a year ago to the day we went in to our game against a Pembury side in mid table undefeated and came away on the wrong end of a 2-1 score line. A year on again we're undefeated and going into a game against a Pembury side with only 4 points to their name. All the right things were said, everyone approached the game with right attitude and Bayley put everyone through a constructive warm up. The first half was tight, we soaked up the little pressure they threw at us and kept it tight at the back. We had chances to score with Baggo blazing over and one or two others maybe not taking the shot when it was on. Eugene picked up a caution for dissent when failing to retreat 10yards from a Pembury free kick. Half time 0-0
The weather was nasty, heavy rain and the usual wind coming across the pitch. In the 2nd half the wind and rain were blowing right back in our faces and making life very unpleasant. After one or two attacks again Baggo blazing over we eventually found a way through. Harrison released Baggo down the left flank, produced a lovely ball into the near post which was met by the Hobbit whose header beat the keeper but not the woodwork, the ball bounced back off the cross where Eugene composed himself before slotting the ball home. That was it, or so we thought. Normally in these situations we would go on and score a few more and play some nice football. Not this time. Pembury, who didn’t seem to have much fight in them suddenly burst in to life. Some slack defending from a corner let them equalize and then a rare mistake from anorexic Pakistani at the back let them in to make it 2-1. Two goals in less than 5minutes. Minutes later it got even worse, a long punt up the field caught our back four flat and their gangly centre forward had gambled and ran clean through to score. With less than 15 minutes to go over turning a two goal deficit looked unlikely but credit to the players although we had lost our shape and football went out of the window everyone battled hard to get back in to the game. Again we pushed forward and attacked their goal and again Baggo kept smashing his shots high over the crossbar. If we had a row Z no bugger would sit there, it’d be too dangerous!
Eventually Mr. Baggeson realized his skills didn’t lie in shooting and he turned provider by laying on a lovely ball for Slade senior to run through and coolly finish capping his man of the match performance and setting up a tight finish. Unfortunately that was all we could muster and it ended 2-3.
