Another Windy Day at Coundon
Affinity’s final league game of the season was their 3rd of the season against St Johns with honours shared in the previous two.
With the cup final a week away the pre match team talk was about putting right some of the things that had gone wrong against LOWFORS. The first half performance was solid and our passing was tidy and creative and was rewarded with a goal mid way through the half with a great turn and finish giving the St Johns’ goalie no chance. A strong wind blowing from corner to opposite corner gave Affinity an advantage in this first half and a deserved second goal nearly came when a powerful Ian header from a corner struck the bar and came back into play. The defence were tight and midfield used the space effectively.
St Johns upped the ante in the second half and put Affinity under plenty of pressure. Affinity soaked up the pressure but found it a lot harder to find and use the space. The cross bar came to St Johns’ rescue from Jamie’s header from a corner, this would prove to be Affinity’s last significant effort in the game as St Johns gradually got on top using the advantage the wind afforded them as the game became increasingly stretched.
Two goals from St Johns in the final 20 minutes knocked the stuffing out of Affinity. The first a strong header from a free kick and the second a fine finish as their striker ran onto a through ball and put it round Dale as he came out to narrow the angle.
This was a good game and a draw would have been the fair result. Man of the match goes to Gary who worked tirelessly all game and won almost every header that came his way today. Special mention also to Luke as consistent as ever and Yobo who filled in admirably on the left side.
Affinity finish fourth a little disappointing after the promising start to the season. Cup Final next week. A winning end to the season would be just reward for the effort and performances of this team over the past few years. Come on Affinity
