It was cup weekend again for Sutton where they faced a Colron team who were unbeaten in their league, so it promised to serve up an interesting tie.
Sutton continued in the same fashion as last week, first to the ball, quick sharp passing and a threat on goal. It was a dominant start which left the home team struggling to get out of their own half. Alex up against his old club was in determined mood and was a constant threat down the left and it wasn't long before one of his rampaging runs produced a goal. Al dribbled down to the byline, chipped the ball over to the awaiting Nester who flicked it home, 1-0 to Sutton. Nester was proving to be a thorn in Colrons side, leading the line brilliantly upfront. Everytime he picked the ball up there was an air of excitement as Colron simply couldn't handle his deft touch and pace, very reminiscent of Henry with a touch of Berkamp when he flicked it one side of the player and ran round the other. But there wasn't just one star but 7 star players out there running through the team from the front to the back with Tom Brookes like a rock at the back. Sutton seemed to be in cruise control with Colron offering little threat apart from their first and only shot of the half which Jacob produced an excellent save from. Although it was only 1-0 Sutton looked comfortable and started the second half in total control again. It wasn't long before a second goal arrived. From the halfway line a trademark Zac free kick was drilled with fierce venom towards goal taking a slight deflection on the way, 2-0. It was a goal Sutton deserved and just 5 mins later it got even better. Nester picked the ball up midway on the right of the oppositions half, ghosted past a Colron defender and let fly a low drive that nestled in the back of the net, a quality strike. The tie looked to be over but from a rare break a Colron forward broke through the Sutton defence, rounded the keeper and tapped it home, 3-1. The goal definitely gave Colron a lift as their team rallied and sensed they could get back into the game. Shortly after a second nearly came for Colron from one the biggest goalmouth scrambles you could ever imagine. It involved probably all the players from both sets of teams all crammed in the Sutton penalty area. Sutton through feet, heads, bodies in the way of what seemed to be an inevitable goal. But Sutton were resilient and some how kept the ball out. This was Colron's best spell of the game as they upped the tempo and again came close from a low drive just brushing Jacobs post. But Sutton stood strong and withstood the last 10 minutes with a battling performance. Sutton ran out worthy winners and now take a giant step forward to the next round of the cup.
MOM: Nester is growing into a great centre forward and was rewarded with two goals. Today he had the look of Henry and the touch of the Berkamps about him.
