Back to the league programme where Sutton played their local rivals Colron. The last time these two met Colron ran out worthy winners but Sutton are higher placed in the league so it should be an interesting encounter.
It was the first midweek game of the season, basked in sunshine the teams kicked off in determined fashion. The pace was frantic as both teams were eager to close each player down leaving little time or space. There was a definite hunger on the field to win the ball in maybe one of the most physical games of the season, all within the law of the game, just very committed. It was great to watch with both sets of players displaying a lot of passion which we rarely see in the modern game. The game was evenly balanced with not many chances early on as both defences snuffed out any advances. In the 10th minute the deadlock was broken. An aimless boot forward from the Colron defender went high and long which bounced in the penalty area over the advancing Jacob. A complete fluke and lucky the ball found its way on to a hard surface to bounce unusually higher than normal. The boys dug deep and rallied, continueing to battle by winning a succession of corners. Half-time blew and on the balance of play Colron may of just shaded it.
Sutton started very brightly in the second half and started to assert a lot more pressure. The boys were starting to find a little more space and were able to work their passing game together. In the 33rd minute Sutton deservedly got back on level terms. Alex’s clearance found Nesta on the halfway line who span away, cut inside and unleashed a shot just outside the area firing the ball into the bottom corner. 1-1. Sutton were not content on levelling as they gathered momentum, pushing forward for a winner. But Colron still carried a threat and the danger signs were there as a long rang shot fizzed just over the Sutton goal. Still at a high tempo, the commitment from both sides was admirable. In the last 10 minutes Sutton were having the better chances as Kai whipped a ball in with Baker a whisker away from scoring. Up the other end Jacob tipped the ball out from his top corner. In the 35th minute a chance to take the lead appeared in the form of a PENALTY. A clear handball in the Colron box and without any hesitation the ref pointed to the spot. Mitch stepped up and slammed it home, 2-1. Just 5 mins to go and Sutton were looking good and going for more as Tom Brookes broke down the wing and put in a peach of cross which just eluded the on rushing Hussey. With just a couple of minutes to go Colron broke away with their forward running at goal and under alot of pressure managed to screw his shot in the bottom corner of the goal. 2-2.
A disappointing end for Sutton who were a whisker away from a deserved win. But fair play to Colron they gave as good as the got and participated in a great game of football
Mom. Kai woods ran his socks off. A rock in the middle, winning and creating everything.
