Away league match played on 04 April 2009.
Kicked off at 12:00 AM

The game today was played on a small pitch with not too much grass on it but the weather was dry and not too hot for the boys to play in.

Wasps got the KO but Sax won the ball off them after a few seconds and were on the attack. Ed's shot went wide and that was going to be the story for a lot of the game.

Wasps had an attack from a long kick from the keeper but it was dealt with easily by Jack. He played a ball into Kyle in midfield but Kyle's through ball came to nothing. On 5 Sam made a good run from the back, linked up with Ed but the Wasps worked hard to close him down and stop him shooting. Over the next 7 minutes we had 7 shots and they either went wide or straight at the keeper, the boys were thinking that they would never score. Some of that was down to the hard work of the Wasps defence giving the boys no time on the ball, some to poor shooting and some to bad lack. After a shot and save on 17 the keeper played a ball out which Kyle won and got to John who managed to get the ball to Ed and he finally put it past the keeper to open the scoring. Sax were going forward and shooting at any chance and we had another 9 shots in the next 15 minutes which were the same as before saved wide or missed. On 31 another corner for Sax taken by John came over to the back post and Kyle was there to score an easy header for the 2nd. The last 5 minutes of the half saw a further 5 shots on the Wasps goal but somehow it stayed at 0-2. The Wasps worked hard and were much improved from the last time we played them but on half time we knew that they couldn’t keep up that effort for the whole of the game and all we had to do was keep going.

Half Time Wasps 0 - 2 Sax

The 2nd half Sax kicked off and were straight on the attack and inside the 1st minute Ed got a ball to George who was back in central midfield, he took the touch out of his feet and smashed it into the top corner 0-3. Over the next few minutes 5 more shots went in and were somehow kept out and it looked like there was some sort of curse on the wasps goal. On 9 Ed got the ball and played it to Jake who put it into the corner off the net to make it 4. You could see the Wasps' heads start to drop and the Sax boys got is together and the next 12 minutes saw 6 more Sax goals and the lads playing some good football. The 1st of these came from a John corner and Connor got his head to it. Another John corner but this time it was Ed, 2 more shots missed and then after another corner and a scramble Jake poked it in for his 2nd, more shots in and then Jake set up Ed for number 8 and the Sax boys were unstoppable. Tom had been moved up to right mid and with John having a rest he was now corner taker and 2 in quick succession deserved more with Sam putting 1 over the bar from 6 yards. Some good play from Tom got the ball to George and he set up Ed for his 4th and to put Ed at the top of the scoring charts. Sax kept pressing and 2 more shots ended up with more corners and Kyle got his 2nd of the game. The boys switched off a bit and with Finchy off the pitch the back four were run about a bit by the wasps striker who got a deserved consolation and then 2 minutes later with jacks toys thrown out of his pram he got a 2nd. The boys woke up again and played a ball down the right, Ed put 1 across the box and Tom got his 2nd in 2 games. The wasps have improved a lot over the season but Sax were just too strong for them in the end and 2-11 was a score that could have been much worse if the other 38 shots we had in the game were a bit more clinical. We worked on getting more shots in training so we cant complain too much about that.

The whole team from back to front done well today and I was impressed with Kyle from the way he played and talked to the team, John for his good attitude, Ed for keeping going when he looked like he would never score, the back four for the 1st half dealing with all the attacks, George for his great goal, Jake for scoring his 2 and setting Ed up, Tom for playing wherever asked and scoring again, Jack for playing when he clearly had a boring game for him, Zach for getting in at left back and playing some good passes to Rossi who caused Wasps defence problems all game, Connor for coming in and scoring plus putting himself about the pitch, Finchy for getting up and down the pitch for set plays and creating space in the box, Kris was as usual Mr Consistent who just does things without a fuss and Sam who played defence and midfield and was a constant threat getting forward.

Well done boys, see you on Thursday at training. The wasps manager was impressed with you and wished you luck next season and he said he is happy they don’t have to play us next season.

David.
