On a cold wet Sunday morning, you would had forgotten that we had know entered spring but either way we had to face a Dees team who beat us 5-4 a few weeks back. With the result still fresh in mind, the determination to collect 3 points was there for all to see, not to gain a revenge on the defeat but to keep our hopes of winning the league alive, any thing les then 3 points then we might as well kiss the league away.
For the first 15 minutes the game was on a even footing with both teams having equal possession of play, Classics looked the more likely to score though with some neat play on the wing from both Earl Francis and Gilbert Francoise. Earl set the tone of play with an outrageous strike from approx 30 yards that the keeper had to tip over the bar. I can assure you Earl is still dreaming about that shot flying in J
With Classics upping the tempo, it was only a matter of time before Classics was going to score and who better to do so than yours truly!!! Deputising for Ade, yours truly showed class and composure to neatly put Classics one nil up. Dees defenders stated the strike was not meant, but if they knew anything about Mr Smith they would know that when I finish, finish in style J
Classics knocked the ball well from front to back with Ray making some excellent runs from the back; Shola and Mark were causing the Dees midfield all kind of nightmares which aided our possession and threat to goal. With yet another good piece of play on the right hand side between Ray and Earl, the ball was swung into the box for yours truly to make it 2-0.
Second half, you had to wonder if it was the same team in the first half that re-entered the field. With sloppy play and indecisive marking, the Dees players scored a screamer into our top left hand corner to make the score 2-1. Dees could smell blood and the Classics started to lose their shape and composure. A few dodgy refereeing decisions did not help the cause but with Classics trying to find their way back into the game yours truly played a decisive pass into the box on to Earl Francis who was fouled to give Classics a penalty. Up stepped Classics captain Fitz Davis who decisively made it 3-1.
Order was restored with the defence looking composed with John and Terry shutting up shop when ever it looked like Dees were coming back into the game. Rodney Wright scored what could be considered the goal of the game, picking up the ball from deep in his half to burst pass the Dees midfield and defence leaving them all for dead to make it 4-1 to Classics.
Ray made it 5-1 after a pass from John, but after that believing the game was won and not thinking about goal difference, Classics started holding on to the ball taking one touch to many and to put it bluntly, started to look sh*t. Dees deserved the second goal, even though their striker who scored the screamer was 5 yards offside, if we kept our focus we would be looking at 5-1 win instead of a 5-2 scoreline.
