Sweet and Sour Take Away!
1st league win at The Sewerage Works Ground and a great start to the season!… Newly refurbished changing rooms, a new sign, a freshly washed kit, Barnstoneworth branded sock ties, a portable bog in full working order, 1 roll of quality bog paper, 7 prostitutes on the bench desperate to prove their worth (Barnstoneworth that is), and 3 points in the bag!
After Fitzy threw his rattle out of his pram and went and sulked on the grass because he wasn’t in the starting 11 (sometimes it pays to listen when the team is read out!) the game got underway. MCYA – Merseyside Chinese YOUTH Association, with “YOUTH” being the definitive word! (or did Barnstoneworth just look old, fat and slow?) certainly looked very nippy and played some good football but failed to take the advantage. Barnstoneworth on the other hand took a while to settle and eventually started putting things together which resulted in 2 great goals from Stevie Echo to end the 1st half: Barnstoneworth 2, MCYA 0.
The 2nd half saw massive substitutions by Barnstoneworth. On came Toddy, Fitzy, Ivor and his Engine, Marty, Jamesy, Big Bad Baby Face Phil and Pete the Toe who came off again quicker than he went on as he was running around like a headless chicken. Despite the changes, MCYA continually piled on the pressure which resulted in 2 goals half way through the 2nd half to draw level. Barnstoneworth started to look quite shakey at times, especially when Jono and Jamesy had to come off, and MCYA pressed hard again and were unlucky not to get a 3rd goal which hit the post and ricocheted across the face of the Barnstoneworth goal mouth. 50 minutes from time MCYA were awarded a free kick on the edge of their own box which was taken with miscommunication between 2 of MCYA’s defence which saw Echo leap onto the ball and chip the keeper for Branstoneworth’s 3rd goal. Although MCYA complained that the free kick hadn’t been taken, a good decision from the ref resulted in the game finishing in a sweet victory for Barnstoneworth 3 and a sour loss for MCYA 2. An enjoyable, good spirited game, but more importantly 3 points to takeaway!
Beer, Indian curry (not Chinese) and chips were consumed in The Pen after the match and amazingly Toddy lasted 45 minutes! The only injuries to report – Jono our stalwart in mid field who took a few knocks and Jamesy with a pulled calf who wont be available for the next game due to international duties. Just one other thing, Robbo (the stuffy twat) won the £10 scratch card!
