WYNTER V SUTTON NEW TOWN ATHLETIC
4 0
This was always going to be a hard Cup game against an opponent who were promoted last year, and that proved to be true. Although Sutton played well and had good possession for quite a lot of the game, the quality of passing and movement told in the end. The match started badly for Sutton conceding after only 2 minutes. After a few minutes Sutton got into their stride and managed a couple of chances. Phil had a shot cleared on 10, and Sutton went close from the following corner, but the keeper saved. A couple of minutes later Nathan hit the bar. Phil’s physical presence was causing Wynter problems, and they double marked him for the first half. He had a couple of half chances before he made a good pass to Edgar whose lob was caught by the keeper. Wynter’s superior passing and movement led to Sutton missing a couple of tackles, and they duly scored their 2nd in the 24th minute.
The ever industrious Andy hit a shot over following a Sutton corner. In the 24th minute Nathan was brought down in the box but the ref did not award the spot kick.
The half continued with Wynter having a few good chances saved by the ever improving keeper Dan.
The second half began with a few chances for Sutton. Andy had another shot over and Keiran hit one wide. The 53rd minute saw the welcome return of Aaron, who came on for Edgar. Aaron slotted into his regular role at right back and his positioning and tackling improved Sutton’s shape. Within a few minutes he was in the action making a couple of goal saving tackles. Sutton were still very much in the game with shots from Nathan and Keiran missing the target. Wynter continued to press, but the defence held out, with Dan making excellent saves, and Ben having his best game of the season at left back. One of Sutton’s best chances came from Nathan’s cross which was headed over by Keiran. The final 20 minutes saw Wynter upping the pressure
although Sutton were still making chances. Dave White came on for Michael in the 78th.
A minute later a good shot from Wynter went in for 3-0, and couple of minutes later they scored again to make it 4-0.
Although losing, this was a good performance against a top quality team.
