Sankey Arms met Cheshire Rovers in a bid to cement their place at the head of the table in the Warrington Sunday League Division 3. A strong Sankey 11 included a first competitive appearance for new signing Stu Wellstead who would be keen to impress his new teammates.
Sankey started brightly and kept the ball well so it wasn't long before Gaz Bouldsworth turned the Cheshire right back and casually slotted past the keeper for the opener.
Cheshire did look dangerous and better finishing would have got them straight back into the game but Stu Wellstead made them pay after about 25 mins putting away a one on one with the keeper with ease. 2-0.
The 2nd half started equally well, Roy Sweeney dancing between defenders on the edge of the box before firing into the top corner from 20 yards. 3-0 and the game seemingly won after 46 mins.
However Cheshire Rovers had other ideas and finally woke from their half time slumber to create chance after chance before they finally broke the deadlock to make it 3-1. Some young striker neatly putting the ball away.
Sankey seemed spooked and the solid back line which looked so strong for the first 50 mins of this match now looked shell shocked. Cheshire Rovers made their pressure pay again when a defensive mistake let them in for 3-2. The game suddenly had a different complexion.
Sean the gaffer made some brave changes on 70 mins to try and turn the game back to their favour and it paid quick dividends. Calland picking up a through ball and charging to the edge of the box before unleashing a shot the keeper could only tip onto the inside of the post and in. 4-2 and back in control.
Only minutes later Stu Wellstead put a ball across the box that was missed by everyone except Tony Burns to tap in at the back post 5-2 and game won.
Sankey could have scored more towards the end but they will be happy with both performance and result.
