The Invincibles!
Heddon strolled to a cracking 2-0 win over Ryton, in a game they really should have won more comfortably by 5 or 6.
Missing a load of players through injuries/work and other commitments Heddon began by playing nice football from the off, there was a more relaxed atmosphere around the team and that relaxation produced some decent football. Gary Howarth, Phil and Joe all looking good in a back four with scoobs. Gary will be challenging for a starting role next year with the quality he showed tonight!
First goal scored by J Lish was a contender for goal of the season, ball played out to Walker on the wing, who cut inside and played a pass into J Lish on the end of the box after Richy (using a footballers brain for once) stepped over the ball, jay then expertly smashed the ball into the far top corner leaving their keeper with no chance. A quality goal.
What followed was plenty of long balls for Ryton with Scoobs lapping it up at the back and scotty coming for anything over his head. Heddon continued playing decent footy, trying to pass through midfield with Murta coming close one on one with the keeper. Murta was continuously marked by at least 2 Ryton players (if not 3) – they have a thing about Murts!
Just before half time Ryton had a corner that they finally managed to keep in play, where their captain headed the ball that looked to be goal bound but was brilliantly headed over the bar by Phillip. Halt time.
Second half came and followed the same pattern, long balls from Ryton and we should have had three more at least, the keeper making two decent stops from Murta and a cracker from Scoobs that looked to be settling in the top corner. Ryton then started to pump every throw in long into the box, so Gary was swapped out for Waddsy at centre half. Waddsy making a telling header with his first touch to stop a goal.
Heddon continued to deal with the long balls and aerial bombardment with relative ease, apart from when Scott got bored in goal and fancied making a save and didn’t come and collect a long ball). With Ryton starting to lose their cool and kicking out a bit (shock!) we broke from a Ryton attack with 2 minutes left and the three lads up front were three on two at the back, Walker passed to Richie at exactly the right time and Richie finished with aplomb one on one with the keeper.
Game over later than it should be, but enough time to give Rich Adams a 30 second run out! Quirk of the fixtures meant that despite playing Ryton 6 times, they never played against a Full Heddon squad and we have won 5 of those games, it just goes to show the strength of our squad.
A few injuries to rest after a long season before the final, lets keep all other football other than the Heed to a minimum before then so we are ready to roll.
Its been a long and very successful season – lets finish it in style by causing a cup upset and beating the likely 1st Division champions
