Making a number of changes to give some lads game time who haven’t seen much of it recently, Heddon ended up beating Heaton Stannington Under 21's 8-2 on Sunday in the minor cup. Making 6 changes from last week obviously meant that it took some time to get our rhythm going, despite taking an early lead through another Joe Slade header with Murta making it 2-0 shortly thereafter.
However, Heddon then took their collective foot off the pedal and promptly conceding one of the worst defensive goals we've conceded in a long time. Ball over the top of Joe (the lad may have been offside) who was slightly (miles) out of position and then a catalogue of errors followed to allow Heaton to get back in the game. Some harsh words were spoken (Dave may have shouted a bit) and tough 5 minutes followed before a lovely move down the wing and a cracking cross came in for Will to head it in from some 10 yards. Lovely goal and given our near dominance meant game over.
2nd half came and we managed to bag another 5 goals to take our total to 8 but we did manage to concede another horror of a goal defensively.
Whilst this wasnt the greatest team we'll ever face, All in all, a tidy enough performance and the lads that came in giving a cracking account of themselves moving forward into a busy period of fixtures. The game wasn’t to our recent standards but a win is a win. We need to be better against Ryton next weekend as we move forward to a run of cup games.
In the hat for the next round!
Wadds: Very little to do, little chance with the goals.
JOD: Out of position for first goal, but nice steady performance other than that. Looked especially good going forward
Tom A: Stonehenge was very solid, making no mistakes. Tidy on the ball.
Scoobs: Man of the match and captain. solid as ever
Joe Slade: 2 goals and unlucky not to have had a hatrick. Solid at the back again
Neil: Quality on the ball, never looked out of place
Flem: Quieter on the ball than recent weeks but work rate was as top notch as it always is. Nice assist!
Elliott: Two assists and unlucky not to score himself.
Richie: Started off too quiet but came into the game nicely into the end of the first half. Unlucky not to have scored.
Will: Quiet start in his first game in two years. Once he got into it started to show flashes of quality that he has. Great header for goal
Murta: Lead the line very well playing out of position, 3 goals and 3 assists - the lad is balling at the minute. will be a big miss next week.
Ross: Took benching like a man and a great team mate following last weeks 'shenanigans' :-). Solid as ever when on the pitch.
Sean: Didn’t start at his best when he came on but once in the game scored 2 and should have had more. Bang in form
Woody: Energetic when came on, part of some lovely moves. missed 2 sitters as per - only scores screamers.
Jlish/Ramma - could only make 3 subs today so fair play to these two for missing out. Team players - example to all.
Rich: Got the pitch looking and playing great!
