And That’s A Wrap!
The season ending game saw the team paired against a City Ladies side that the girls dealt with comfortably first time round. A lot has happened since that first match but the girls wanted to finish on a high in what could well be the final match ever for this team. With Millie away it was Mya who gloved up between the sticks.
Things immediately seemed different to recent weeks, on the front foot from the off with the visitors starved of possession, Juniors’ played the early part of the match in their opponents half. The first opening fell to the feet of Emily, her effort well saved. It was left for Megan to again show her quality, cutting inside her fullback before placing a well struck shot into the far corner of the goal (1-0). Other opportunities came and went before the team took a big stride towards the closing day victory the girls craved, Megan again finishing from Annabel’s assist (2-0). Brooke and Megan had further efforts saved but the deserved two goal advantage was taken into the break. HT 2-0 Another strong start to the second half with Meg, Carly and Brooke all going close. The girls searched for a third goal that would all but guarantee the win but patience would be the key, a goal against now could completely change the pattern of the game. Summer is a player that is asked to sit slightly deeper, break up play and try and get the team moving up the pitch, this can often be overlooked with the focus on attacking players but her tenacity and awareness is not lost within this group and she gave the visitors the usual treatment today. The only way forwards for them seemed from their goalkeepers towering kicks but the defensive line held firm. The team probed and the goal of the game finally broke the resistance, Emily teasing in a cross and Brooke finding the roof of the net (3-0). Brooke bagged her second after more good work from Emily (4-0) and Megan completed another three goal haul for herself, rounding the GK and slotting home from Emilie’s third assist of the day (5-0). This took Emily well into double figures for assists this season. The final whistle was blown and the curtain fell on a season that had proved a test in many ways.
FT: Juniors’ 5 C. Ladies 0
Summary: more like their old selves today. Thanks to Mya for donning the gloves and with a defensive rearguard of Layla, Lila, Eva, Annabel and Lauren, earning a first clean sheet of the season. Summer’s protection gave Abbie, Megan, Brooke and Emilie attacking freedom and Carly’s controlled display really warranted a goal that never came. As Billy Bremner said ‘Side before self…every time’ ?? well done team!!!! As the curtain fell on the season, it also fell on this team of Corfe Mullen Girls. The season as a whole had tested the team in more than purely playing football. It had tested resolve, personalities and a desire to play. Personal thanks to all the girls, a specially the 13 that gave it everything week after week. Whether as part of Wimborne Town or any other team I would really like to hear that the majority keep playing this game….believe me is doesn’t last forever! To our older girls who will have to move on, Abbie and Layla, thanks and please don’t hang up them boots! Finally, a massive thanks to Dave, coach and everything else, Rob and Mark for the dedicated support, Dan, your help with training and to anyone else that has helped in any way, especially that vocal support for the girls. Scott and Sue, your financial support has been crucial, thank you so much for your backing!
