The UNITS lost a hard fought, tights game this morning at Borrington against a committed WHC side
The UNITS lined us with Show, Barney, Lacey, Darbs, Eggy, Baker, Jim, Coco, Jay, Taylor & Pountney. Subs were Ashton, Turner, Ross, Hunter & Marcus
The opening exchanges belonged to the UNITS but clear chances were at a premium, WHC were playing a narrow 4-3-3 formation and were getting the ball forward early to their 3 tall strikers
The key point of the half came on 20 minutes when the WHC centre half misjudged a back pass and put Pountney in the clear, as he advanced into the box the recovering defender fouled Pountney at least three times resulting in him being spun around and unable to shoot when clean through. The letter of the law is red & a penalty and the WHC centre half admitted it was a blatant foul yet the referee somehow waved play on
Shortly after Tayl’s rattled the upright with a header from a corner as we kept knocking the door but couldn’t quite find the goal. WHC were competitive and the game was tight yet on 40 minutes Eggy cleared front to back and Coco broke the offside trap, his first touch was heavy but Jay seized on it to rifle home the rebound from 8 yards to give the UNITS a slender advantage at HT
Half Time UNITS 1 v 0 White Horse
Cuzer asked the boys to dig in at HT as it was a tight game and the next goal was crucial
Alas the UNITS started terribly in the 2nd half and within a minute WHC were level, some sloppy play initially started by Jay gave WHC a throw in a dangerous position, the ball was helped back into the box and WHC won the first & second ball resulting in their striker prodding home from 8 yards to level up
This gave WHC a lift and they continued to press a shell shocked UNITS side.
On 55 Cuzer introduced Hunter for Baker with Tayl’s going into midfield and shortly after Pountney got away only to be denied by a last ditch challenge
The UNITS shot themselves in the foot on 65 minutes when Tayl’s gave away a sloppy and needless free kick in the middle of the park, from the resulting ball in the UNITS switched off as the WHC striker was given the freedom of the 6 yard box to prod home past the stranded Show in the goal, awful defending
Cuzer then threw on Ashton for Jim and shortly after Turner for Jay as we pushed hard for an equaliser
Credit to us we put WHC under intense pressure in the last 20 minutes, their keeper has made two world class saves from Jay and Ashton with thunderbolts from the edge of the box, we’ve then had Darbs miss a free header from a corner before from a Turner pull back Ashton has had another shot hit the defender on the line and flick over the bar with the keeper well beaten
In the dying minutes Hunter has sidefooted at the keeper from 10 yards when normally he would have buried it and then Lacey from full back has seized on the defenders mistake and forced the keeper to again tip over from 15 yards
All in all a disappointing defeat for the UNITS in a tight game we should be digging in and winning. Frustrating to be undone by our own mistakes and we didn’t make WHC work hard for their two goals today which we handed to them due to a catalogue of errors
Man of the match went to Pountney who looked a bit more like his old self today, working the channels and causing the WHC backline problems
