Potential table decider, with both teams in with a chance of winning the league. Neither team, especially with Wroughton waiting in the wings and to play Purton and Supermarine (twice), able to drop points. Especially Purton, as this would take their destiny out of their hands. To add the icing to the cake, this was a dress rehersal for the League cup final in May. So to say there was a bit of tense atmosphere would be an understatement.
Purton enjoyed the early stages of the match, with James W heading direct at the Supermarine keeper from a Louis corner.
Charlie wins ball on halfway line, puts the ball over the Supermarine defence for Matty to connect, but goes over the bar; Charlie goes one on one with goalie, but is saved. After a rare visit into the Purton third of the pitch, Supermarine get caught on the break, Charlie one on one, again, with the Supermarine keeper, who sticks out a leg to save the ball.
Purton keep applying the pressure in the Supermarine penalty box, but just cannot convert their chances. Then in the dying seconds of the first half, an attack from Supermarine wins them a penalty, only for it to hit the post and then cleared by the Purton defence.
Half time 0-0.
Second half, and Supermarine were getting more of the play, as their first attack goes wide. From a free kick Supermarine have another attempt but is plucked mid air by Tom.
Matty goes on one of his runs and get’s pulled down in the Supermarine penalty box. Coolly steps up to put the ball into the net 1-0 Purton (51min). Matty puts a long ball down the wing, but Andrew not able to get to it, to put a cross in.
Supermarine, didn’t let their heads go down, and make it 1-1 (59), when Purton didn’t clear their lines.
Purton start to apply the pressure again, but still unable to convert any of their chances, then Supermarine go on the counter attack, but the cross is cut out by Tom. Supermarine get the ball into the net from a corner, only for it to be disallowed due to a foul on Tom.
70min Sub Sam for Matt
Purton try to clear the ball in midfield, but rebounds off the ref to set up another Supermarine attack, but Tom saves.
Full time. 1-1
Some would say a fair result, but Purton would be regretting not taking those early chances, plus a draw benefits Supermarine more, as Purton now need Supermarine and Wroughton to drop points. A few nails to be bitten yet.
