LATEST HEADLINES : MISLEADING (tongue in cheek) MATCH REPORT SUBMITTED BY GUIDE POST PRESS SECRETARY IN ORDER TO DISGUISE HEAVY DEFEAT AT HANDS OF A TEAM THAT WERE MUCH BIGGER AND OBVIOUSLY OLDER THAN OURS !!!! FC Morpeth resorted to heavy handed tactics by fielding four players who were obviously aged in their mid-twenties in order to secure this win to keep them at the top of the league table.
Despite this the youngsters of Guide Post (several of whom are only six years old !) posted a good second half performance into a strong wind to keep the score difference to five. It could and should however have been so much closer. Guide Post played the first half with the wind at their backs but went in 4 - 0 down after failing to convert at least three gilt-edged goalscoring chances. Morpeth did the opposite and converted each and every opportunity that came their way.
With three senior players unavailable (Luke, Jack & Ryan) Jack Sanderson was given a starting place at right back and did himself proud with an excellent performance where he nullified all threat from a skilful left winger. 4 - 0 at half time was hardly a reflection of how the game had been played. The main difference between the sides in the first half particularly was the inability of Guide Post to cope with a well organised off-side trap played by Morpeth which on one occassion caught six (I'm not kidding ! SIX !!!) players off -side at the same time. Time after time the lineman's flag went up. The normally sheepishly quiet (NOT !!!) Guide Post travelling support was becoming increasingly vocal as frustrations grew. Brad's introvert Grandad (or Big Bad Brian as he's known to friends) almost had to receive oxygen just before half time as a beautiful cross from Reece Bosomworth fell to the feet of Aaron who arrived in the six yard box with perfect timing. Gooooaaaaalllllll !!!! was the cry from Brian. Too soon as the ball just cleared the bar. As the Dutch management team of Stefan and Jahn applauded Aaron's perfect timing and attempt, Brian offered his own form of consolation by informing Aaron that there was a special 2 FOR 1 deal going at Specsavers !!!
Disaster struck straight after half time with Morpeth scoring two or three quick goals. The black clouds were forming above and it seemed as though the boys confidence had gone when all of a sudden and with renewed grit and determination the team sprung into life. An excellent chase onto a through ball saw George slide a neat finish low past the advancing keeper. Ross repeated the trick with a similar goal soon after which was quickly followed by more pressure and an instinctive finish from Ross from a half chance inside the box. The dark clouds started to clear !! Chances were created at regular intervals and the Morpeth keeper was forced into three or four good saves. Two more good chances fell to Aaron and Brad and the woodwork was struck. The game ended on a high with Guide Post finishing strongly with pride intact. Morpeth were a good team and seem sure to gain promotion. Guide Post can feel sure that they could match and even beat Morpeth on another day. Both sides had played the game in good spirit and the game was enjoyed by all of the spectators (well most of them !!).
Reece Brown was awarded man of the match for Guide Post after a strong all round performance showing determination and an example to all on the park. Well done.
