G&S went in to this year ending league match looking for a good result against poor opposition in Woolwich 90.
The exercise was to build on goal difference but perform well and be ready for tougher games to come.
The points were in the bag by half time, but the performance, although not the worst of the season by far, was lacking in something. Maybe the season meant things were taken too lightly, but the Blues could pay if games are not taken at full pace at all times.
After only 4 minutes the game looked to be going the same way as the previous encounter. John burst in to the box only to be brought down. But lacking normal marksman Robbie, out with injury along with Adam and Rich (something which clearly affected the performance of the team), the pen was left to Luca who blazed over from 12!
Within 2 minutes Rovers were under pressure from a through ball and Dean came out well to clear. NO oppo is to be taken lightly!
It took until the 24th minute for James to square for Shaun to finish calmly for 1-0. Deserved but tardy!
Almost another 10 minutes passed when James' left wing corner, won from George's shot, was flicked on well by Shaun at the front post for Jay to steam in at the far to head home for 2-0.
A further 10 and with half time looming, Shaun nodded back well for George to fire home for a 3-0 half time lead.
8 minutes in to the 2nd half, after a plea for more football, G&S were nearlt pegged back but Dean saved superbly low to his right.
Bill came on after 55 for the lively Dario and within 15minutes James' excellent cross was headed goalwards by Shaun but the keeper saved.
2 minutes later Luca launched a long free kick which was mis headed by the porous defence. Russ raced on with passion having been pushed up to right mid from his wasted position at right back. He was on fire again as his cross was headed home easily by John from close range for 4-0.
10 to go and the ever willing Berto was brought on for some extra pace.
There wasn't an instant impact as defensively the Blues went asleep and conceded a very disappointing consolation for Woolwich.
On 84 Shaun capitalised on poor defensive work for 5-1 as the game burst in to life.
Dean saved well on 86 again, before the ever so cool Dave, who had another solid game, touched the ball back with a minute remaining for Billy to smash home for 6-1.
Then the goal of the game with seconds to go. The ball was pumped forward and man of the match Russ challenged in the air. The ball broke for Berto. He cocked his right foot and with only a split second to react, pulled the trigger to see the ball fly in to the top right hand corner for 7-1. GET IN MY SON!!
Well a good end to the game, the year and a short break before, as we know, bigger and better performances to come!!
HAPPY CHRISTMAS FROM THE COMMITTEE!!
