In one of the furthest away days of the year, FCNW turned up to West Lavington looking to kick start our season after a disappointing opening day defeat to The Old Road. And we sprinted out of the blocks, scoring after just 25 seconds when Bamford expertly chipped over the defence for Deacon to smash home an early goal.
The game was very even, and both teams battled hard. Worton & Cheverell were awarded a penalty after a handball by Sam, and although it had to be retaken due to an infringement, their striker expertly blasted it passed Whitehead.
Half time came, and Deacon had to be replaced by Colin Simms due to his ongoing hamstring injury. Despite all my best efforts, I can confirm the club do not have funds for a masseuse to bring Deacon back from the dead, so it looks as if a few weeks of rest will be needed for Deacs.
Matt Parsons switched up top for the second half, and his pace and energy were a real positive to the team. Worton & Cheverell took the lead through a 35 yard wonder volley, which really should never have been allowed to happen if we had cleared our lines adequately. But we showed great spirit to get immediately back into the game, with Matt scoring a header passed the advancing keeper, Bamford again getting the assist.
In the next 20 minutes, the game could have gone either way. We started playing well to feet, and really looked a threat with the ball in behind for Matt to chase like a little ginger greyhound. But a defensive error cost us with two minutes to go, and Worton & Cheverell took full advantage.
On another day, we would have won the game, and there were some real positives to take from the game. We battled hard for 99% of the game, used our full backs effectively, and unfortunately two moments of individual error cost us. We need to learn from this, and build from here. Next game is huge, and one we really can take the points in, so onwards and upwards, and come on FCNW yeah.
