North Wilts suffered a humiliating defeat to Pig & Whistle United B who themselves lost 7-0 on the opening day. There were some notable distractions in the game, namely Ryan's injury caused by a maniac of a goalkeeper. We all wish Ryan a speedy recovery; being a Bailey, he is made from hard stuff, and it takes a lot to cause him pain, so it must be pretty serious. We just pray to the lord that he gets better soon.
In addition, there was a strange smell at Leafy Lane, not smelt for many months. The smell of alcohol wafted around the middle of the park, and perhaps that lead to a few mistakes in the middle. Club management are keen to stress that they expect players to have respect for their teammates and not turn up stinking of booze! We welcome all players back to the pub after the game, where you are more than welcome to have a drink or two!
In reality, the lose was our own fault. We were quite solid at the back, Bailey Senior even winning a header or two. But our lack of confidence in our own abilities cost us dearly. Too many times we went away from our notoriously great short passing game, and Bailey Senior once again gifted a goal kick to the opposition for the second week in a row with a "pass" from our own half.
Mark will no doubt want to forget his "Barthez" moment of loss of concentration. We've not seen a cock up like that since Captain Denham last year. As a reminder, there is no prize for cock up of the season, so please do not try anymore! Whilst Mark did make a mistake, there were again some great saves in there too, and with 3 games under his belt, Mark should feel proud of his development as a keeper in that short time.
Following Ryan's injury, the shift in personnel that was made was effective at the back. Big Togg's did get muscled off the ball a few times, but overall, a solid performance. And a good start to the season for Sam, who as well as teaching us all a thing or two on the pitch with his tidy touch, also taught us all that women prefer his shaved pubes, and that they give him an extra inch.
Man of the match per our vote was Jacko; solid as normal, and not too many runs down the wing this week which helped (apart from when he was right wing, then in act a few more runs would have helped!).
On to the cup run now lads. The result shows our league will be tough; we will need to fight for every point, every goal, every ball. Come on North Wilts yeah!
