Crawley Panthers under 14’s Blue sponsored by Southern Railway and S & N Tyres of Three Bridges claimed the Mid Sussex A league championship with two games remaining to complement their league cup final victory earlier in the year.
The match day jitters were showing as Panthers who needed just 1 point to secure the title traveled to Haywards Heath and met a very dogged St. Francis team who were determined to make it as difficult as possible for the blues to achieve this.
Panthers did make it difficult for themselves despite having the majority of the play as numerous passes and shots failed to find their targets while having to deal with some extremely fast counter attacks from the home team.
With six minutes of the first half remaining Edwin Murahwa latched on to a Jobe Wolfe cross to stroke the ball home to ease the pressure, moments before a Jermaine Beer shot cannoned off the crossbar. After the break it was more of the same with Panthers dominating play yet failing to find the crucial second goal, mainly down to the excellent St Francis keeper pulling off several fine saves.
With the minutes ticking by, substitute Sam Truelove bravely won the ball in his own half with a stooping header, then glided through the home defence, drew the keeper off his line and calmly found the back of the net to secure the victory.
Panthers have a 100% Mid Sussex league record winning every game played, conceding the least number of goals and scoring the most. Suffering their only defeat in the Sussex County Cup semi final, loosing by a penalty 1-0 to the eventual winners.
Team: Robbie Legg, Ben Rogers, Sam Truelove, Jake Truelove, Alex Hardy, Will Bateup, Edwin Murahwa, Hayden Bulloch, Adam Ceschin, Seika Jatta, Brendan Milborrow, Jermaine Beer, Jobe Wolfe.
