Newland Young Boys 3 – 1 AFC Woodlands Reserves
Reserves travelled to Newland Young boys this week only to see their unbeaten record go up in smoke. A depleted squad due to work commitments and Holidays started nervously but a stale mate for the first 30 minutes with Gormley and O’Donnell clearing up any potential trouble they held their own.
After 30 minutes the home side took the lead after some fine saves by Hewson they eventually powered the ball home.
Reserves started to pick up by playing football on the floor and then looked to have equalised through Rothery just before half time but he was adjudged to be offside.
Halftime 1-0
It was honours even for the first 10 minutes with both sides not really threatening. Then Hewson went down in agony after collecting a cross. Ambulance responder attended and he looked to have made a miraculous recovery however following further treatment had to be taken to hospital with knee ligament damage. (Get well soon Jack) Kulic then replaced Hewson in goal and with 20 minutes remaining he was beaten by a fine finish from the Young boys striker. Reserves then went 3-0 down minutes later when the wingers cross floated above Kulic’s head and landed in the far corner of the goal.
Reserves pushed forward and Stannard pulled back a goal from a fine freekick. At this point the Young boys were on the back foot but woodies could not make another break through and game finished 3-1.
A below par performance from reserves and though technically were the better side, the opponents “were up for it” and “wanted it more”.
Young boys now go top with Reserves in Second, there is no game on 29th for reserves, so they will have to wait until 5th November to put this result right against Holme Rovers reserves.
