Hornsea Town 3rds 2 - 3 Woodlands Reserves
This week saw reserves travel to the coast to face Hornsea Town in the blistering sunshine. Woodies started slowly on the slanted pitch and failed to control the ball in the opening 10 minutes. Although the opposition had plenty of possession at the start they never really troubled the back four of Bottomley Moore James O’Donnell and Stannard.
After 15 minutes Will O’Donnell drilled the ball into the bottom corner to break the deadlock. Woodies then started to dominate the game territorially however the energetic visitors continually pressurised the reserves and this lead to periods of scrappy play. Rothery nearly made it 2 with a fine strike only to be denied by a fine save from the Hornsea keeper.
With Stannard and Lomax now starting to click down the left hand side woodies finally made it 2 -0 when Stephenson (Spelt it right this week pal) pounced onto Lomax’s cross.
Just before Half time the visitors pulled a goal back, with a swerving strike, much to the disappointment of Phes the reserves mascot who held his head in hands like Ronnie the Rhino.
Half Time 2-1
Woodies started brightly again in the second half with O’Donnell and Nichols starting to control the centre of midfield. Wheldrake went close before Stephenson scored his second to make it 3 -1. With 35 minutes remaining Kulic had to replace Luke (Knees) Bottomley due to injury. Woodies continued to drive forward and a could have been well clear of their opponents but for a string of fine saves by the Hornsea keeper denying Stephenson, Kulic, O’Donnell and Wheldrake. With 10 minutes remaining the referee who up to that point had been in fine form began to penalise Woodies for anything. James O’Donnell and Stannard both went into the book for arguing with the referee. (Only 1 winner there boys) With 7 minutes remaining disaster struck when the Hornsea winger’s attempted cross went over the stranded Hewson to make it 2-3. Gallant defending from the reserves especially the chuckle brothers saw Woodies hold on and claim the 3 points. This weeks MOM went to James O’Donnell.
This week Woodies Reserves entertain unbeaten Long Riston 3rds at Kent Road. Players to meet 1pm
