Woodland Reserves 4 - 3 Gilberdyke Phoenix Reserves
This week the reserves entertained previously unbeaten in the league Gilberdyke at Kent Road.
With First team call up’s this week for Will O’Donnell, Clark and Stephenson, the return of Ellis, Bottomley and Severn all back from the international break was a timely one.
Woodies got off to the worst start possible when they conceded after 2 minutes from a set piece. To their credit they rallied and soon drew level through James O’Donnel who coolly finished inside the area.
End to end stuff followed with Woodies and their opponents failing to control the game although neither team really created chances of any note but with 10 minutes to go before half time Dixie the goal machine Rothery elegantly headed home from a tight angle following good work from Lomax and Stannard. This gave woodies a 2-1 lead at half time.
Gilberdyke fought back and equalised with 5 minutes of the restart to again put woodlands on the back foot. The reserves then started to get a grip of the game and Mitchel’s through ball was coolly lofted over the advancing keeper by Rothery to make it 3-2. Woodies then started to dominate with Mitchel going close from a free kick. Then disaster struck and Gilberdyke equalised with a fine individual goal from the visitors striker.
Woodies restored their lead minutes later when Rothery completed his hat-trick after heading home Mitchel’s free kick. With 20 minutes remaining.
Dogged defending from Bottomley Gormley O’Donnel and Stannard and the tireless Ellis in midfield closed the doors on another fight back from the visitors. Reserves were denied a penalty when Wheldrake was brought down, the player then saw red after his second bookable offence for dancing like Louis Walsh in front of the goal keeper. Lesson to be learnt for Management take Wheldrake off before Goole Town’s game reaches half time and the music starts.
Woodies saw out the remainder of the game to maintain their status at the top of the league. It has to be said though that the good competitive game was spoiled by the referee who was more interested in himself and his presence then letting the game flow.
Man of the match went to Dixie the goal machine Rothery
This week Reserves are away to Newland Young Boys all players to meet 12:30 at the Woodlands.
