Zion FC were majestic as they swept aside Rubber Chickens with an emphatic comeback after they had taken a shock two goal deficit. Four goals from David Jones, three from Dan Shotton, and one a piece for loan man Jack, and Alex Ternouth meant that Zion thrashed the Chickens 9-2.
A sluggish start to the match saw defensive frailties exposed by the Rubber Chickens who took a shock early 2-0 lead. Perhaps this was the worst thing they could have done. They metaphorically and litterally woke the Lions who roared into action. Alec Ternouth powered home a shot after David Jones' through ball. Then Jack had a solo effort draw the teams level. It was Jones who then wrong-footed two defenders before powering home, and then when Dan Shotton lofted a ball forward the midfielder powered his volley into the bottom corner of the net. Shotton then got his own spectacular volley with a powerful strike from a tight angle. It was breathtaking for the fans and shell-shocking for the Chickens. Paul Muzzall then performed some heroics making a double save of the top order to keep Zion in control. Shotton grabbed his second of the game latching onto a long ball and delicately flicking the ball past the keeper. Jones warpped up the first half scoring making it 7-2 with a comfortable finish. The turn around left the Chickens scratching their heads as Zion had been on top form.
The explosive first half was not repeated in the second. A rather more social affair saw fewer chances, however, Zion controlled the game well. Keeping the ball and defending strongly. The final two goals of the game gave Zion a huge score while they didn't feel the need to excert themselves too much. Fine saves from Muzzall meant Rubber Chickens couldn't add to their tally of two. Dan Shotton tapped home to seal his hat-trick from a David Jones throw in. Shotton then returned the favour to Jones as his pass was tapped home by the midfielder. 9-2 and Zion's job was done. The fans applauded them off the pitch at the end of a quality performance by each player.
Paul Muzzall spoke with the media after the game, and said that at times he was mesmorised, "Some of the football was out of this world. We went down by two, and then sprung into action. I was left largely redundant and could only watch as they destroyed their opponents. It was a thing of beauty." Man of the match Dan Shotton was delighted with the team performance when he spoke with Sky Sports News, "Everyone put in a shift today. I started badly but once the cobwebs were gone I really enjoyed the goals and the moves I made. I think individually and collectively we were top class today. Muzz made some cracking saves, DJ scored some blinders, Jack, and Alex worked hard and took their goals well, so overall a good day at the office." Zion will be hoping for an equally good day at the office when they face Deer Park Rangers next week needing to win to keep their slim title hopes alive.
