The match started with Alton firing a long ball forward, but the Knights defence of Courtnage, Komboni, Grundy, Hooper and Garland dealt with this swift attack quickly. The Knights forced the ball forwarded, Sellitto lifted the ball towards the Alton goal; Holland headed the ball for Grundy who released Doel; Doel skipped past a defender and slotted the ball to Holloway, but his effort was well saved by the Alton Keeper. As the Knights applied the pressure, they were rewarded with a corner; taken by Holloway, the ball floated into the danger zone but the Alton defence kept their heads and quickly cleared their lines. The pressure was now building on the Alton goal, with Sellitto and Holland passing well and moving forward; Alton conceded a throw-in, quickly taken by Komboni but Alton were alert and turned their defence into attack. As Alton broke forward, a lone striker was given the ball and nothing stood in his way, other than Rust, the Knights Keeper. Rust rushed out, diving at the striker’s feet to safely collect the ball, stopping this dangerous attack. As the Knights fought forward again, an effort by Sellitto went just wide; Alton took a quick goal-kick but Owen intercepted, he slipped the ball to Sellitto who edged forward before releasing Holloway. Holloway saw the opportunity to shot and did, striking the ball into the Alton net, 1-0 Knights. Alton still pressed forward, and from a corner Rust once again was needed; as the ball floated into the Knights area Rust pounced onto the ball, killing the play. From the clearance by Rust, Gardener and Garland moved the ball up-field, but the Alton defence had re-grouped and conceded a throw-in. Komboni took; Holland flicked the ball through to Holloway, who rounded a defender before shooting, finding the back of the net for the 2nd time, 2-0 Knights. The Knights then camped in the Alton half, and from a poor drop-kick by the Alton keeper Sellitto went for goal, lifting the ball over the keeper but 2 quick witted defenders cleared the ball off the goal-line. Alton then fought forward and the Knights defence conceded a free-kick in a dangerous area: the Alton striker went directly for goal, lifting the ball over the wall but unfortunately clipped the top of the cross bar and the ball went behind for a goal-kick. A few moments later Tadd kicked the ball up-field for Gardener; Gardener travelled a long way before releasing Holloway; Holloway rounded the keeper and fire goal-ward, but this effort went wide. With only a few minutes remaining, Sellitto and Gardener combined to release Holland; Holland crossed the ball into the area when Owen thumped the net into the net, 3-0 Knights.
2nd half started with Alton attacking strongly, and from good passing and running off the ball, soon had a scoring opportunity; which they took, firing in a goal only minutes into the 2nd half, 3-1 Knights. The Knights then woke up, passing the ball well, forcing Alton to concede a throw-in; Komboni launched a long ball in, which Alton failed to clear; Hooper hit a high ball into the Alton area, Sellitto collected and slipped the ball to Holloway, Holloway scored giving the Knights a 4-1 lead. Rust then sent Gardener forward, he and Sellitto played their way into the heart of the Alton defence; Sellitto fired in a shot but the Alton keeper saved well, diving to the ground to gather the ball. Alton then found their second wind, and came at the Knights, an Alton player flew down the wing and thumped in a powerful shot; Rust couldn’t hold on and the quickest to react was an Alton striker, pouncing on the ball and scoring, 4-2 Knights. Again Alton came forward, Garland, Courtnage, Hooper and Grundy still had plenty of work to do before the final whistle, holding Alton at arm’s length. Again Alton came, passing well but being stopped at the final fence by a determined Knights defence; from such an Alton attack, Grundy cleared the ball up-field, Holland and Holloway chased, and then sending Doel goal-ward; Doel fired in a shot but again the Alton Keeper stood strong and gather the ball safely. As the final whistle blew, the manager had to decide who should be man of the match; and due to the way Rust dived and saved what looked like a certain goal, early in the match, was award this honour.
